One of the biggest factors in the cultivation of an individual’s personality is their past. The past is the road that delivered the individual to where they are today and will affect where they are going in the future. Mine shaped the characteristics that define me and made me the person that I am today. I was born in Escondido, California on March 10th, 1998 to my amazing parents Dennis and Brandi Shenenberger. My parents have always liked to say that I’ve been difficult even before I was born due to the fact my mother had to be put on long-term bed rest to prevent her from going into pre-term labor. I would switch back and forth between loving school and despising it. Often times I would be bored by the school work that was too easily completed. This was changed by a once a week class that was named Individualized Learning Opportunities (ILO). This class gave me a reason to enjoy school. The teacher Mrs. Krebbs was the most amazing person that I had ever known. She would let us play with glue and be messy and give us the attention we often lacked from our other teachers. I made several amazing friendships, took a few incredibly difficult classes and met some of the best educators during my time at Ada High School. My Sophomore year was certainly the least stressful of the three years. My classes were easy, I had a lot of friends and it was the year I joined the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA). My fashion merchandising teacher Mrs. Wright convinced me to do a 30 page written business plan for a fictional tanning salon that offered a revolutionary new color matching technology. I placed fourth in the state that year. Not placing in the top three only gave me more dedication to placing first the next year. I competed again my Junior year of high school, this time developing a business that combined daycare for children with proper diets and kitchen safely. Once again I placed fourth in the state. Not giving up after missing the second time of not placing in the top three was very difficult for me. I had made the decision to devote my high school career to this activity that didn 't seem to be taking me anywhere and I regretted not being active in Student Council or picking up a sport instead. Thankfully my advisor convinced me to give DECA one last try and that is when I developed my love of business, particularly in finance. Personality predispositions can determine levels of extraversion, which determine the levels to which one seeks social support, thus determining positive affect. Similarly, personality predispositions can determine levels of neuroticism that may influence one’s style of coping in the face of both positive and negative external factors which can determine negative affect (Diener, 1996). Happiness, a core aspect of positive subjective wellbeing, involves maintaining a superior level of positive affect in comparison to negative effect, based on specific positive or negative emotions linked to the recent experiences in one’s life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Positive emotions such as joy and pride must trump negative emotions such as frustration and sadness in the recent past or present in order for an individual to feel happy. Life satisfaction builds on this and is a cognitive valuation of the quality of an individual’s experiences as a sum throughout their entire life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Individual personality traits have been found to influence the different patterns and levels of life satisfaction, positive and negative affects and simply general, overall happiness (McCrae, 1983).
Now Mrs. Trotter is my favorite but that’s beside the point... I loved school and I met all of my friends. This was truly the year that started my life. This was the year that I learned math, reading, science, social studies, and all of these subjects. School was something that I looked forward to and I loved learning all sorts of things and then when I got home, bragging to my parents about how smart I was. The debate of nature vs. nurture still continues today in the world of psychology. The effects of an individual’s genetics and the effects of their environment on their personality and actions is an age old debate that is still inconclusive. However, it is evident that both sides of the argument carry some form of the truth. It can be contended that the major characteristics of an individual are formed by their environment, more specifically, their past experiences. An individual’s past moulds and shapes their identity, if they do not make an effort to move on from it. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald shows that clinging on to the past prevents individuals from fully experiencing the present, eventually leading to resentment, dissatisfaction, and misjudgements.

In the day to day life, experiences and connections are made. Many things that occur in one’s life can all stem from their individual personality, but interpreting how one’s personality guides their life presents a difficult challenge.
