It was hot outside, any touch of a breeze was a blessing. As the sky was bright blue and the rich, green grass had been freshly watered, it was all the makings for beautiful day . . . or so I thought. We were in mid-softball season, the point of just starting to get comfortable around your new teammates. I was a shy sophomore who got pulled up to varsity, the new faces of upperclassmen were now my teammates with whom I am supposed to form a bond. As with all underclassmen, the desire to just fit in is great and going any length to achieve that is an important goal. As it was about a month into the season, it’s safe to say I was pretty much friends with everyone on the team. None of them close enough where I would invite them over and have a slumber party, but I could be myself around everyone and have a good time. My one really close friend was Katelyn, since we have been friends since grade school. Katelyn and I did everything together, we were attached at the hip. The three seniors were left in charge to manage the other nine players in the annual Senior Practice. This practice is nothing but pure fun; laughing, playing flag football and all-around just fooling around. As Katelyn and I were still 15 years young, we often hitched rides together to get to place to place. As previously discussed among the team, we would ride from the field to the high school with Jess, a junior, on this day. Katelyn and I as always, were still messing around on the field when we saw Jess in her running car, that was packed with the other kids.
