Essay #2: Security
Security is only a personal psychological feeling that we can only feel for ourselves. I believe it is an idealistic illusion we can only pursue. You may feel safe from threats because you live in a neighborhood with a low crime rate, safe drivers, a security system, but your neighbor could feel exactly the opposite. If it were an unsafe neighborhood, you could feel secure even though the crime rates are at an all time high, it's all a matter of personal feelings.
There is a type of mentality called “optimism bias”. This is the type of mentality where people think “that could never happen to me, car accidents only happen to other people”. The mentality in which people think they can do better than anyone else in the same situation. This means people will feel like they can do something that someone else did, even though the person before them failed or had their security breached.
Feelings of security come in all shapes and forms. From believing in the power of the police force or having a specia...

Policies and procedures are guidelines instructing service providers to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, and have a responsibility for safe guarding. A set of policies are guidelines formulated by an organization to reach its long-term goals, which according to the multi-risk agency team is to protect and prevent adult’s from abuse and neglect. Establishing multi-agency safeguarding, sharing information amongst the allocated healthcare professionals suited to a case, in a multi-disciplinary meeting, to identify signs of abuse and provide justice to victims who confide in the multi-risk agency team. This meeting consists of a range of professional opinions, and the patient’s intel on the situation and their conclusion, the patient

Now you are going to take a look at the preventive behaviours of victimized and not victimized groups. It is obvious that in many cases the lack of protective measurements contributed somewhat to victimization. If you make a comparison between the two groups, you can see that at the time of the crime burglary victims had fewer household security measurements than not victimized. (Weinstein, 1989) As you can see there is no guarantee when or who is going to be victimized. Many will think that burglary victims’ experience does not deserve to be examined, but they are wrong. The main reason is that households are something sacred, where a family stores its memories, documents and everything else that no one different from family member deserves to see. This mean that these victims do not deserve invaded homes.
Surveillance is the monitoring of behaviour. In addition, surveillance system is the process of monitoring the behaviour of people, objects or processes within systems for conformity to expected or desired norms in trusted systems for security control (Cohen and Medioni, 1999). Video surveillance systems have existed 25 years ago whereby it started with 100% analogue system and gradually becoming digital system. The closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera is the most popular video surveillance because of its reliability and low price. The camera does not broadcast images but it records them, so that user can always check to see what occurred while they were away. It is widely used at public spaces and residences for security purposes.
Despite all the controversy and disagreements, most of the populous would agree that on an individual level, privacy is our space to be ourselves as well as to define ourselves through autonomy and protecting our dignity. Our interactions with others can define the level of our relationships with them through the amount of privacy we can afford in the relationship. As we age and immerse ourselves into society, we gain a sense of confidence and security from our privacy. A sense that others know only what we tell them and we know only what they tell us in exchange. What we fear is what others can access and what they might do if they knew of our vulnerabilities. Maintaining and keeping our vulnerable aspects private, we develop a false sense of personal safety from the outside.
Why does the government make it harder for average citizens to protect themselves? Police cannot always protect everyone in the community. There are only about 500,000 police officers throughout the country, which means there is around 125,000 police officers on duty at any given time. Other than a bodyguard or a law enforcement officer at everyone’s side twenty-four hours a day, the most effective deterrent to a criminal attack is the criminal’s fear that the potential victim is armed and prepared to defend themselves.
This essay touched on the topics of Negativity Bias, Confirmation Bias, and Gamblers Fallacy, and Illusion of control. Each is just a few samples of a massive plethora of biases and theories based upon humanity. Most people have certain biases that govern their subconscious and will trigger if certain scenarios are met. It is hard to change some effects, like confirmation bias, after it has occurred because it easier to go along with preconceived notion rather than put the effort in reshaping thought
That is why you need some better protection. Something that scare the attacker and alarm the people or the police patrolling nearby. Now some may say that a personal alarm is useless because it can't actually stop the threat. It is true that a personal alarm actually can't stop the attacker, but my point is three-fold. First, it is the perfect complement to any choice of weapon with offensive power (stun gun, pepper spray or any such thing). Second, it will alarm people around you and third, it will stop actual confrontation for most of the time.
Along with Privacy and security comes the issue of terrorism, Constitutional rights, and Prisoners of War (POW). The privacy vs security debate has two sides to it. Many think that it has influenced governmental interaction with citizens. Sometimes the law focuses on the wrong interests. Just as security cameras are made for thief’s, there come along violations within a person’s workspace or personal life. Privacy emerged early on including Jewish and Roman laws safeguarding against surveillance. Once populations began to grow citizens around the world started filing complaints about noise and unlawful search and seizures. Security and Privacy become an internationally growing issue that affected the world. Security is known as a sort of Independence from danger. Privacy is a freedom from the Undesirable. “He noticed that the needle on his gas gauge was getting low and decides to pull over. As he walks into the gas station he pays for the gas with his credit card, steals a pack of cigarettes and a newspaper without the clerk knowing. B Horton proceeds out the doors and recognizes a security camera as he walks to his car. Later he is contacted and tried for theft. Some believe the camera was an invasion of his privacy but others say that Horton took from society” Webster 21) In America this was and still is a serious issue. The founders saw it coming and implanted laws against home invasions based on national security or to protect others. The fourth amendment in the Bill of Rights is one plan of action that the founding fathers implemented into the United States Constitution to give people a sense of privacy from law enforcement. Also the Fifth Amendment placed a specific procedure on how police go about arresting an individual. ...

Public safety covers a wide variety of people and organizations, but carries one common theme and that is, the public’s safety. This course has broadened my knowledge on the many roles that make the public safety sector go around and the role the public plays in it as well. My thoughts before the course were close minded and to the point. I quickly realized that policing is not as cut and dry as I once portrayed it to be. Society is always changing and adapting, and it is the job of the those in public safety to adapt and change with it. The mindset that I grew up with, in rural Saskatchewan, was the police are good people and you will only need to deal with them if you break the law or see someone break the law. My answers in the module 1 survey reflected my upbringing. My first thought for
It’s true what everyone talks about safety – you are the key to your safety, when you do it safely you do it the right way and the best gift you can give to your family is to always stay safe. We have been taught by our parents and teachers to be cautious while doing a number of things. That’s very essential in our daily lives, because one needs to be extra cautious to prevent unavoidable accidents. However, mishaps do happen everywhere in the safest of places, no matter how careful we are in our actions. It is highly unpredictable, what’s going to happen the very next instant. There are numerous incidences we come across like simple trips, falls, cuts due to sharp objects, burns or sudden worsening of a person’s health condition, causing
Safety and security needs may include job security, having a savings account, insurance policies, and finacial security, and health and well-being. People feel the need to control this aspect of their lives to make them feel more secure. This need for safety and security contributes largely to behaviors at this level (Cherry, 2017). Together, the safety and physiological levels of the hierarchy make up what is often reffered to as the basic needs (Cherry, 2017). Financial security plays a role in people’s behaviors. For an example, someone struggling with finances may be unhappy and feel insecure about how they may pay for something. Whether people realize it or not safety and security play a huge role in how people feel and as well as their behaviors. If a person feels unsafe or uncertain in the environment they are in they will seek to meet the highest level of needs for safety. Safety and security needs are an important part of survival. If someone is not aware of how to determine their environment is dangerous and need to meet the level of safety and security it could be harmful to them. Safety and security are almost as important as physiological
