Participation Awards Should Be Allowed In Sports

Imagine that you are a first grader who participated in basketball and your team had won a tournament but, the only thing you received was a participation award. Don't you think you would have liked to receive a metal for winning and giving it your all but instead you just get a participation award?! If you receive a participation award it could make you feel that you are not good at the sport you are in because the only thing you could receive was a participation award. Plus, the cost of these awards is very expensive and the money could have been used for so much more, like donating it to charity. Although some people my argue that participation awards are a good thing to receive, it is evident that participation awards influence you to not try and to just give up on the sport.

First of all, participation trophies can make you think you are entitled to something just because you showed up and it can lower your self esteem. According to the article against participation awards, it describes the awards to "reward the parents for signing their kid up" instead of "the childs effort and attendance." For example, the minute the child's name is written down on the paper, they will receive an award even if they don't attend any of the events. According to the article that argues against these awards, it stated that people believe that "there is a misguided use of money by sport organizations." For example, don't you think that those fifty dollars used to buy the trophies would have been better if it was sent to a homeless shelter? Another example, when a kid doesn't have a family or a home, you would feel guilty when you are standing there with an award that you didn't want to have. Overall, the cost for participation awards is unbelievable and the money used to pay for these awards could have been used to make our world
