A typical movie that portrays a paraphilia of some sort is Fifty Shades of Grey. In the movie, Anastasia Steele, a college student at Washington State University Vancouver, meets Christian Grey, a handsome and wealthy 27-year-old CEO. They fall in love and quickly develop romance. However, as the story progresses, she learns that he is obsessed with “BDSM” – a well-known abbreviation for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. Personally, I think the major reason why the movie should be listed as a type of paraphilia is that it includes sexual practices in a form of “sexual masochism” and “sexual sadism”. Once an unusual sexual practice causes harm to oneself and others, then it should be labeled as a paraphilic disorder. In the movie, Christian Grey does not tell anybody about his paraphilia disorder. Every person who has intercourse with him must sign a contract in which they agree to not share the secret with anyone. I think the main reason Christian Grey made everyone keep the secret is that he doesn’t want to ruin his reputation, and he worries that his paraphilic disorder will negatively impacts his life in many aspects. I think it is necessary to label a paraphilia as a type of “disorder” as it is presented in the DSM-5. Although some extreme sexual practice would enhance the performance and the satisfaction between people during intercourse; however, these “abnormal” sexual practices should be keep moderated and under-control. In many cases when the unusual practice get out of control and become a type of paraphilia, it will cause physical and mental harm to any person involved in such unusual sexual practices as well as negatively impacts the
