“I am Malala” begins with the event that changed her life, being shot by a member of the Taliban and her family being moved to safety in Birmingham,England. She opens the story painting a picture of what the area that she lives in is like and and translates words from Persian and Urdu (the primary language in Pakistan). She talks about her best friend Moniba and how they had grown up together and loved watching Twilight and listening to Justin Bieber. Malala’s family had been receiving threats for over a year, but her mother was scared that they would target either Malala or her father because they spoke out about the importance of girls getting an educations. After the first chapter the book goes back to her birth and talks about what was happening at the time that she was born and where her name came from. She was named after Malala of Maiwand a who was the greatest heroine of Afghanistan. Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist and human rights advocate, who has fought for equal education for girls and education in impoverished countries. When she was 15 years old, she was shot in the face by a Taliban member who disagreed with her views on girls having an equal opportunity to have an education. After she recovered, she continued to advocate and spoken in front of the UN to discuss the importance of education.
