Essential to overcoming adversity is the ability to cause change in yourself and others. In the book, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, Katniss has to learn to survive in the games by not dying. This helps us to know who we should follow because Katniss would risk her life for her friends and family. Ultimately, Collins shows us that change, compassion and determination will help you overcome adversity. To initiate change, one must first desire a change. In the beginning, the death of Katniss's father affected her family and their daily life. Katniss was independent and determined to keep her family alive. As the plot progresses, when the game people changed the rules so that if you partner was still alive, two could win. This caused Katniss to go crazy and risk her life, just so she could find Peeta and could both win. In the book, Claudius Templesmith says, “Under the new rule, If both tributes from the same district are still alive, BOTH are allowed to win!” (244). During the games, Katniss changed a lot. She risked her life and cared about other people beside her sister. She made Rue, her ally so they could be friends and help each other out since they both knew very different and helpful skills. This allows Katniss to be open to others. This proves that Katniss can help people even though she want’s to do her own thing. As you can see, change, compassion and determination will help you overcome Adversity. This vital lesson is not just important to Katniss in The Hunger Games. This lesson can be applied to everyday life when you have to make a decision about anything. It can also be applied to life when you need to help someone survive in a war like in pakistan. Finally, it can be applied to our lives because we have to make a decision either to help or be selfish and not help anyone. For example, In our daily life we make so many decisions like choosing what to eat at lunch, or if you should bring your coat outside. Katniss had to decide on a lot of things. She had to decide if she should volunteer as tribute instead of Primrose her sister, if she should make Rue her ally, if she should go find peeta so they could both win, and risk her life so she can save peeta and they can both return to their families and district 12 Katniss is a changemaker because she helped rue, and Peeta during the Hunger Games.
