In The Hunger Games by Susan Collins, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, has a younger sister, Primrose (Prim) Everdeen. The relationship between these characters helped me to understand them as individuals and enabled me to realise the complexity of the personalities they possess.

Katniss and Prim have a very dependable and loving relationship. When their father died in a coal mining explosion, Prim was 7 and Katniss was 11. Their mother became depressed and was unable to provide for them, leaving two young children virtually parentless and grieving. Katniss was forced to care and provide for a family of 3 by herself, which meant Prim had to rely on Katniss for food and protection from a very young age, and Katniss feels responsible …show more content…

At the time of her father’s death and her mother’s incapability of guardianship, Prim was only 7, and much too young look after herself. As a result of this, Prim had to rely heavily on Katniss is more than a sister. To Prim, Katniss is more of a friend, mother and role model. When Katniss volunteers in Prim’s place, Prim is incredibly scared. She tells Katniss to “Just try to win...promise you’ll win?” Prim stays hopeful and as strong as she can when faced with the probability of her sister’s death. Although Prim seems vulnerable and incapable, her relationship with Katniss and reaction when it is put in danger proves her to be in fact sensible, strong, and very able.

By studying the reliable relationship between Katniss and Primrose, I have been able to understand each character in a more personal way. Although Katniss acts brisk and unloving, she really just feels as though she cannot trust anyone else and needs to be stoic in order to protect and provide for her sister.
