While reading the novel, “The Hunger Games”, written by Suzanne Collins, one could see without difficulty that a running theme flows through the writing. This theme being perseverance, the one thing that had allowed Katniss Everdeen, the main character that a reader follows during the events presented in the narrative, to live on and be crowned victor with her teammate, Peeta, a young man who ventures into the Hunger Games with Katniss. The theme of perseverance appears frequently as it is tied to every trait and skill of Katniss which includes the idea that she is persistent, caring, and resourceful when it comes to surviving in severe conditions similar to the Games. Every thought she has and every action that she performs drives her to …show more content…
This trait being perseverance which appears in the novel more times than once. At one point in the narrative, Katniss is dehydrated and on the verge of death, but she realises that the solution to her particular problem would be to find water no matter how difficult it may be to fulfill that task. The text states, “I grit my teeth and pull myself to my feet...The sun’s beating down, even more searing than the first two days. I feel like an old piece of leather, drying and cracking in the heat. Every step is an effort, but I refuse to stop.”(pg. 169). The quote given shows the exact amount of immense agony that Katniss is experiencing and how ardous of a task it is to move forward. Yet, Katniss does not give up once and decides to continue as getting to the thing she needs most requires her own tenacity and motivation. During the duration of the novel, the Capitol manipulates the games to set up a fire attack against the remaining tributes which forces Katniss to maneuver and think quickly to persevere through the brutal attack. The text states, on page 175, “Every sense I have goes into overdrive as the need for to survive takes over. There’s no time to judge if a move is the correct one. …show more content…
After the Games have begun, Katniss makes an alliance with a young tribute named Rue because she had helped her escape from a group of Careers, tributes who have been trained for the Games ever since they were born, earlier in the narrative. As an alliance, they create a plan to explode the remaining food supply of the Careers, but Rue is caught and a spear pierces through her chest, killing her shortly after. It is Katniss that witnesses this and the following event precedes in the quote given. The author says, “A few steps into the woods grows a bank of wildflowers. Perhaps they are really weeds of some sort, but they have blossoms in beautiful shades of violet and yellow and white. I gather up an armful and come back to Rue’s side. Slowly, one stem at a time, I decorate her body in flowers. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair with bright colors.” (pg. 237). This quote shows the caring side of Katniss as she chooses to honor Rue and revolt against the insidious Capitol, the ones who were to be held responsible for the torment inflicted on all tributes involved, to show her sorrow for those who were forced to watch young Rue die. This action and character trait ties into the theme of persistence because Katniss is
The Hunger Games follows the structure of monomyths closely. Katniss, the byronic heroine, volunteers to take her sister’s place in the annual Hunger Games, where tributes fight to death to entertain the totalitarian Capitol. At the beginning of the Game, Katniss identifies herself a girl from the seam, which provides her with a stoic strength. However, as the hunt progresses, Katniss questions this identity. As she observes the brutality of the Hunger Game, Katniss grows indignant. Ultimately, the heroine appears empathetic and distains causing sufferings as opposed to being a stoic girl.
Love and hope, together are a timeless literary thematic duo, which continue to inspire countless variations and sub-genres of romance literature. For the last many centuries, romance as a genre, is arguably the most popular of all narratives. However, the theme of love often takes presentences and overarches other thematic interpretation of stories. So why then are people seeking romance in the literature they ready? Suzanne Collins wrote The Hunger Games with the intent to introduce her young adult readership to a number of politically charged themes. Although Collins's work is acknowledged for successfully presenting themes of sacrifice, versions of reality, and power, her audience conversely identifies with the debatable sub-them of love. Social forums, such as the Official Hunger Games Facebook Website exposes an insider's perspective of sort, which reveals public perceptions and interpretations of Collins's work. Even though the purpose for the fan-website built around The Hunger games is to provide a discussion space. Participant's discussions however, unintentionally reveal a...
Fictional character, Katniss Everdeen is an anecdotal character and the hero of The Hunger Games trilogy created by author Suzanne Collins. Katniss and her family originate from a coal-mining district that is the poorest of all the districts, called District 12. Over the span of the Hunger Games trilogy, Katniss volunteers to take the place of her sister, Prim after she is selected as a contestant to compete in the Hunger Games, a broadcast battle that only has one victor. Katniss signs up with kindred District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark, where the pair contend in the Games together. Katniss utilizes her insight with bows and arrows to survive, and the two turn into the victors subsequent to challenging the Capitol 's endeavor to compel one to murder the other (Collins, 2009). Katniss turns into a stirring image of defiance to the harsh Capitol and leads a rebellion that eventually takes down the capital and puts an end to the annual Hunger Games (Jacobson, 2014).
Rue suggests a tactic of evasion that save’s the life of Katniss, and that also leads Ayala 2 to escape from her enemies. Along with a few injuries that she quickly recovers from thanks to a remedy of leaves that Rue is familiar with from her district. “ After a minute or so, Rue presses a. gloppy green wad of chewed leaves and spit on my knee. ”Ohhh.” The sound comes out of my mouth before I can stop it.
As human beings, we thrive to find the meaning of our existence and also the truth. In the books and movies, The Hunger Games trilogy, the very heroic character Katniss Everdeen is on a quest to find truth. As she peels back the layers of lies that swaddle her world, she finds truth within herself and everything around her. To reflect on the novels and films, we must look at the principles of axiology and also examine the plot, characters and how they react to each situation; for reflecting on “the girl on fire” we must study the grounds of epistemology with her own identity. The whole story starts off with the day of the reaping when Prim, Katniss’ sister is selected to enter the Hunger Games, a game created by the government at the time to keep the society scared. One boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by an annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, an event in which the participants must fight to the death in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one individual remains.
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
A time where Katniss displayed determination is when her sister, Primrose Everdeen, is initially chosen. Katniss immediately steps forward and exclaims ‘ “I volunteer” I gasp “I volunteer as tribute”‘. This quote demonstrates Katniss’ determination to protect her sister. Katniss repeats herself to reinforce the fact that she doesn’t want her sister to go to the Hunger Games. Katniss’ determination is shown while she is in the arena and was fatigued and dehydrated. She asks for water but a parachute does not come, she then realized she was near a water source. While Katniss was stumbling she thought ‘Every step is an effort, but I refuse to stop. I refuse to sit down.’ This shows Katniss’ determination to not give up. To continue and not stop. The repetition is Katniss reinforcing her determination to not give up. Katniss is a determined hero because she is up for any
Rue and Katniss are allies, and when they are separated Katniss hears Rue screaming for so she runs screaming for her. Katniss finds Rue and helps her get out the trap she was in, but while she was doing that she gets a spear thrown at her causing her death. While she was dying Katniss comforts her with a song that causes the effect to be sadder due to the slow song. She then covers Rue with daises from a field after her death. When Katniss comforts Rue she was using feminine characteristics, which The Capitol wanted while she was not in the games. However, when she in the games they expected her to with a more masculine approach to everything; therefore, not showing emotions to events that would usually cause emotion. This appealed to pathos by showing the various emotions it caused. The Capitol was unfair to Katniss by wanting her to act in a different manner while she was in the games from when she was in The
In our Society when you don't follow the rules, you become an outcast to the rest of the society. Suzanne Collins’ novel series, The Hunger Games criticizes our society and its demands for people of specific genders to act in certain ways and become certain things. Stereotypes concerning gender are prevalent in our society and all over the world. However, The Hunger Games gives a very refreshing tone of “mockery” to these stereotypes. Katniss Everdeen isn’t your typical 16 year old girl, and neither is Peeta Mellark a typical 16 year old boy, especially when they are fighting everyday just to survive. The Hunger Games is a work of social commentary, used to convince us that there can’t and shouldn’t be any defined “roles” based on gender. A mixture of “stereo-typical” gender roles within a person and their actions is what people need just to survive in our world that is changing every day.
The American Revolution will forever be remembered as the turbulent period when Americans fought for their independence against the British. As a result of this revolution, America is truly the land of the free and home of the brave, where citizens have control of their own fates. In the book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, there are many events described in the plot that parallel the historic events of the American Revolution. Both the American Revolution and The Hunger Games portray a group of underdogs rebelling against a greater power that is ruling corruptly.
The Hunger Games was a good movie when it came out. This movie refers to a dystopia world in which there are 12 districts and a capitol who rules with an iron fist, in which the districts must provide a tribute to fight in an annual Hunger Game as a punishment for a past rebellion. Katniss Everdeen is a hunter from the 12th district, which Gale, her friend gives her tips on hunting. One day her sister, Primrose Everdeen, is chosen for the Hunger Games, and in order to save her, she volunteers instead to serve in the Games along with Peeta Mellark. During a TV interview, Peeta confesses her love for Katniss Everdeen, which causes the enragement of the latter; however, she later forgives him as he explains to her that it was only to gain sponsors. During the Hunger Games, she did not receive a lot of supplies except some medicine to cure a wound, but Districts 1 and 2 almost won the Game due to their training, and amount of supplies which Katniss destroys but cannot recover any of them. The Hunger Games was one of the best movies I ever watched because it has a little bit of everything and it captures the real-life survival game that we live on a daily basis.
Katniss is a good person at heart. Katniss may have hunter’s instinct; kill anything or anyone who tries to harm the people she cares about. Katniss would risk her life for them. Even in the games, Katniss would not kill the one person who stood in her way of winning. Katniss shows what matters compassion and her humanity. Katniss shows she is more than apiece in their games (232). Katniss remembers what Peeta said on the Roof. Peeta said,” I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not” (141). Katniss does not want to lose herself, which she never does. Katniss shows she is a good person by forming alliances and taking care of other tributes. Katniss does not think she is good but she really is even if she cannot see it.
During the route to the creation of science fiction action novels, authors commonly create characters with very different backgrounds because of the various themes science fiction action novels can approach such as ; man versus system, man versus man and man versus nature. In the case of the novel Hunger Games, how did Katniss Everdeen, the novel’s protagonist and her actions, affect the main theme of the novel. In a truly exciting and twisted story made by Suzanne Collins, the protagonist’s actions directly affect the main theme of the novel. Having read the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy, I have been able to realize that the reasons why the protagonist’s actions directly affect the main theme of the book, man versus system are the
“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor” (Collins 19). Those were some of the last words Katniss heard before her sister’s name was called out for the seventy-fourth Hunger Games. Without thinking about anyone else, Katniss bravely accepted her sister’s spot in the games, a basic suicide mission. Katniss Everdeen had a vibrant personality, she was bold, intelligent, and a loving person. Her country, Panem, was controlled by President Snow, who let his country suffer in poverty. The capital was harsh and forces every district to send one boy and one girl to take part in the yearly Hunger Games. While a Disney Princess would yell for her
The Hunger Games is an astonishing reading experience that propels the reader to feel the emotions expressed by the characters throughout the novel. These emotions were expertly developed by Suzanne Collins to create an atmosphere of compassion and understanding. Katniss Everdeen was affected by turning points which caused great adversity, demonstrated her resilience and also discipline as a human being. While others would’ve backed down and gave up, Katniss persevered to accomplish her goals no matter the situation. Volunteering as tribute, losing her sister-like friend Rue and threatening her own life for the benefit of all the districts are all examples of turning points. In life we are all faced with points where everything changes, these
