The Battle of Roberts Ridge
The Battle of Roberts Ridge, also known as the Battle of Takur Ghar, occurred during Operation Anaconda during the assault of the Shah-e-Kot Valley. The original mission for the Navy SEALs involved was to set up observation posts (OPs) throughout the area in order to assist follow on forces with both actionable intelligence and coordinated fires during the assault of the valley. The mountain Takur Ghar was supposed to be the site of one of these OPs. The task organization for the operation is as follows. Audacity was the only area that the US forces continually displayed. The SEALs chose to go back and assault a larger force. Ranger CPT Nate Self chose to assault the enemy bunker on the top of Takur Ghar even though his men were fixed by enemy fire. He also chose to attempt airstrikes on the bunker even though his men had minimal cover and were well within the kill zone of the ordinance.
The Battle of Roberts Ridge was completed successfully but the original mission was not completed. The men on the mountain fought bravely to complete their objectives but took a large number of casualties in the process. It is an example of how a failure to recognize the characteristics of an attack can lead a force to face immense challenges from the very beginning of the mission.
