A student currently on YRE named Megan said,“I believe that schools across America should not be open year-round. With schools open year-round more pressure can be put upon a student. Summer vacation gives students time to relax and a stress-free break. Studies show school does increase chances of depression and anxiety in teens. Year-round school would increase these chances. Year-round school could also hurt the economy. There would be no "back-to-school" sales, which means no extra income during this time of year. Many students also obtain summer jobs, teaching them responsibility. Summer vacation is necessary for our children to be happy and to become well adjusted young adults.” (owlcation.com). Scientists have found that school increases levels of stress in students. As a consequence of a year round calendar, those numbers what just go up even more without the long break students need. (owlcation.com). Also, summer break motivates students and gives them something to look forward to at the end of the year. For instance, students would continue school with only a four week break instead of a 10, 11, or 12 week break. This would not be enough time for students to relax after a year of working hard. Even if they did, after only four weeks they would need to start another year all over again causing more stress and even depression. Without summer break, students couldn’t get the rest they need. Converting to a year round school calendar would shorten summer break by a great deal too. With only a few weeks of school, older students couldn’t get summer jobs that they might need to help support themselves. Also with a shorter break, families couldn’t take as long or as many vacations as they could. Vacations would help students to relax and have fun along with their break. To add on, students who don’t have as long breaks wouldn’t experience as much as a student who has a longer break. Being in a yearly school wouldn’t give the students as much time as others to do more things. Some trips require people to take off long periods of time from their usual life. In fact, a shorter break would limit students to what
Students who attend year round schools wouldn’t have any back to school sales, as their summer break would only be a month long before going back to school. This would cause companies that rely on summer break to financially drop down. (Jaclyn Zubrzycki). It wouldn’t only hurt companies who sell school supplies, but travel companies, vacation resorts, and hotels who rely on summer break too. There would also be a financial cost to switching to a year round calendar as schools would be constantly filled with students throughout the year. This might also cause the school to need more repairs to its structure. Major repairs or a series of small repairs might not be able to get done fast enough during the short break they have. (Jaclyn Zubrzycki). There are a lot of costs to switching schools to year round.
