Year-round Education: Could it be Beneficial?
Summer vacation; a time to relax, to go on vacation, to spend time with family, and to take a break from school. After a child is born, he or she has three years to do whatever he or she desires. When a child turns four, or in some events five, the child will be forced to attend school for the next sixteen years of his or her life. In most schools throughout the United States of America, students attend school from mid-August or early September until late May or early June. After this nine month process, students will have a break lasting from June to August. This time period of the break is known as summer vacation. Throughout the U.S., school officials have considered making the school year last

Those in support of the year-round school year belive that summer vacation is a time period of wasted time that could be used for learning. They believe that through the three months, students forget all of the information that they learned in the previous year. They also believe that there are many extracurricular opportunities that are missed during summer. Although this may appear to be a good idea, a theory like this will not end well.
In the traditional school year, students already have a large amount of work and activities to deal with. Students are given copious amounts of homework, and in order to have a decent college application, they need to participate in extracurricular activities. This is too much for a student to handle and all of this work causes stress. To relieve stress from students’ lives, students should be given a break.
The school calendar should not be altered because the students need the three month break. Students are given a large amount of complete. In many cases, students are given more work than the amount they can handle. Because of the stress that the large amounts of assignments, students can receive anxiety, panic attacks, stomach problems, headaches, sleeping problems, sadness and depression. A three month break is the perfect amount of time for students to take a break from school and avoid this major
First, the pros of year round schooling can include; effects on absence and burnout rates, effects on budget, more frequent breaks, and also a big effect on academic achievement. The way that year round schooling works to reduce burnout and also reduce absences is that by having more frequent breaks; students are less likely to want to skip class. This is definitely noticeable after spring break where most schools don’t have any days off until the end of the year that is usually more than 2 months straight. In other words the “April, May, June stretch”. Year round schooling will also help students with their academics as well because with the way the schedule is set up, students do not ha...
The summer vacation students on a traditional schedule receive could be very beneficial since summer gives time for the students to attend camps or other activities that would allow them to learn. The camp may not be like the learning in school, but students would be able to get a different style of education while having fun. Lynn-nore Chittom and Jeff Klassen, two authors who wrote about year-round vs. traditional schooling say,
Although, year round school wouldn’t be just a bad thing. For example, shorter summer breaks may decrease the amount of learning students lose. It can also mean that students are less likely to have summer learning loss. Also, students test scores lower after summer break. Therefore, some people get free or reduced meals but in the summer they wouldn’t get that. Shorter breaks would cause a hard time to find childcare and to pay childcare.
Year round schooling is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, and has shown positive academic benefits for students enrolled in year round schools. Many countries implement year round schooling, and academic ability of their students greatly surpasses those of the United States. Year round schooling, as well as increase in school days should be implemented in schools nationwide in the United States. The need for long summer vacations is non-existent, as society has become industrialized. Implementing year-round schooling, and increasing the number of school days will allow the United States to invest more time into education in order to grow and build academic success.
For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools.
Back in the early ages, the idea of year-round school would be thought as completely insane, because the farming families depended on their children to be home during harvest time. Now in modern times, the term year-round school is becoming more and more common in the United States of America. Slowly the schools are changing the way they teach, from giving the students a long three month break to a shorter one month break during the summer. The change of America’s high schools to the year-round schedule benefits both the schools and the students because they still get breaks throughout the school year, the children are less likely to forget information, the children would have more time with the teachers to learn, and the parents would not have to pay for childcare during the long summer break.
As a student, it can be hard to remember things from past school years, when you have a long summer break breaking the educational flow. This knowledge loss over a long summer break can lead to a lot of time being wasted on re-teaching past lessons. Year round schooling supports the teachers to just keep continually teaching kids new information over a year long period, without big reviews which can take up days or weeks depending on the subject. Also, when students are let out for a long summer break, it can cause new sleeping patterns and motivational habits to develop. This can be a problem when school starts up and kids are out of sync from the long summer break they just had. With the year-round schooling the breaks are much shorter which could prevent a student from getting into a new sleep or study habit. Having well rested and attentive students is a big help to the teachers.Year-round schooling is also helpful for teachers because with the numerous breaks they would have more time to catch up on grading papers and/or projects from their classes; parents would then have better up-to-date status of their child’s grades. If students go to a year-round school they could have a better chance of not getting homework over their breaks (Debate.org). This is because most teachers who teach at year-round schools feel that they are not as rushed to teach their curriculum because they don’t have to waste time on reviewing past lessons and kids can use their past knowledge better to help understand what they are learning
The article "Year-Round Education: Is Summer Vacation over...Forever?" an article in The Week Magazine, "The students learning and experience during the summer after school is over" ("Year-Round"). Year round education (YRE) is a traditional school schedule in the United States of America provides nine-months of instruction and three month summer vacation. YRE has been present in society since the early 1900's (Bussard). At the end of the 180 day, the teachers and students have enjoyed a relaxing vacation during three month long summer breaks. Schools will continue to follow 180 days system on the calendar; yet, these will have a shorter every term. The traditional calendar is simply changing the instruction and summer vacation that all the all students and staff are in school or vacation at the same time. Many people thought YRE is a good idea for students to improve academic achievement; but there are several reasons why going to school all year round is a bad idea against YRE because the family tradition, work experience, and air conditioning.
In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when our country’s students needed school off to help with harvesting (Palmer). Trimble Local Schools Superintendent Kim Jones says, “year-round schooling is the notion of getting away from the old agrarian calendar...which was formed up around the planting season. Students were out of school from April until harvest to work in the fields,” (qtd. in Hapka). Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar.
Attending a year round school will help students retain the information they are taught with greater ease due to the shortness in breaks between times they attend school. An Indianapolis fourth-grade school teacher says, “In this calendar, my goodness, (it takes) two weeks at most.”, referring to the six weeks it normally takes to review the previous year’s lesson to get the students up to speed from the summer break (Johnson). If you are to add twenty days to t...
When we think of year-round schooling, we automatically think of no summer vacation. Across the country, schools are changing their schedules to a year-round curriculum. A year-round curriculum means that students and teachers no longer have two months of summer vacation. Some parents and teachers have enjoyed the year-round schedule, others do not approve. There are some schools that are implementing the year-round program to have more consistent instruction, while other schools are doing it in order to save money. Each schedule has its own pros and cons.
Summer should be a time to relax after hard work. "Students should deserve a break after their hard work...
“There is so much pressure on setting up the classroom and getting ready for the kids to return. So often, staff development is not fully utilized by all teachers or is not the best it could be since the teachers feel such pressure to get into their classrooms.”( Towler)Where is is no time for the teacher to get fully really for the students after the break is over. Without the time to clean up the classroom and meeting for the new school year. With the many breaks it can be a very choppy year that will hurt to the student. Patricia McCracken who went to school in a year round school said,
The first reason why year round schooling wouldn’t be a good idea is because of focusing for long periods of times for some students. First of all, many kids with disabilities or elementary school would have a hard time focusing that long of a time without their traditional three month summer break. Second, the more breaks students have might make it harder to focus before and after breaks. Before breaks many kids would be excited to
Give Students a Break Students at Tech, and indeed at most colleges, eagerly anticipate holidays because they provide a welcome break from classes. Although some may say that breaks only take away valuable class time from students, they fail to see the educational benefits that breaks afford. Tech's sparse holiday offerings take little advantage of these benefits. Tech is harming students, who could greatly benefit from the time breaks offered for relaxation, family interaction, and studying. Despite criticism, breaks do not necessarily have to adversely affect students' education by taking away important class time.
