Oglala Lakota’s Native American war leader, Crazy Horse and Okonkwo the protagonist of Things Fall Apart, are both considered heroes. Crazy Horse was a Native American in the battle of Little Bighorn in the year 1876. He led an army of Native Americans against Lieutenant Colonel George Custer who led the opposing European battle team, this battle was fought for the Native Americans to get their land back. Okonkwo, however, is a victim in the novel Thing Fall Apart. He is known for defeating Amalinze the Cat, who wasn’t defeated for seven years. Crazy Horse was the leader of his tribe. Little did they know their victory was not going to last for long. They went to court and were placed in a land reserved for only them to separate them for others. Although, it didn't work as planned, Crazy Horse is still a hero for standing up for his tribe and their land. Many people who fought for their rights, along with others are considered to be a hero, mostly because they succeed. This can only go to this case partially. For Crazy House did not fully succeed, but he still did what he did. He helped his tribe in a movement to take their land back. Okonkwo and Amalinze are known for somewhat the same reasons. They both are known for helping their people. Although that is true, Okonkwo plays a victim. Not as in a victim of crime, but a victim of society and its gender roles. In the novel of Things Fall Apart, it voices, “Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and weakness.It was not external but lay deep within himself.
