I am a student at Soledad High School and I am writing about the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This book should not be prohibited because of its use of foul language, violence and racism. Of Mice and Men is a book that should not be prohibited. This book has been used in classes for assignments and projects. The book does have foul language, but the kids have been exposed to these words, whether they have heard it at home or at school. According to Chicago Tribune, “Adolescents and preteens are swearing more publicly than ever, especially at school…” This is showing that kids are already cursing. When they are reading the book, the words are nothing new to them. They have already been exposed to these kind of words. In addition, the books …show more content…
For example, in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, the city’s school board challenged the book and voted that the book should stay as a ninth grade school curriculum. It should not be challenged in any state. In our classroom, we have read this book and when we were reading it, nobody seemed to be making any comments about the use of language and racism mentioned. The reason being is that we are mature enough to handle what is in the book. If parents do not want their child to read it, then one solution I have in mind is that teachers give out a letter. This letter will mention that we are reading a book that contains foul language, racism and violence. If the parent of the child does not want him/her to read it, then they would sign it, saying they do not want their child to read it and the student will give it back to the teacher. While if the parent does let them read it, then the parent still has to sign saying yes their child is allowed to read it and still give it back to the teacher. If the child does not bring back any letter, then they are not allowed to read it until it is signed. This is one solution that teachers can
Every one hundred years dialects change and what is considered “politically correct”, or socially acceptable, changes. “David Bradley argues that ‘if we'd eradicated the problem of racism in our society, Huckleberry Finn would be the easiest book in the world to teach’” (Zwick, Jim. “Should Huckleberry Finn Be Banned?”). If we, as a nation, make it a point to rule out all books that could possibly offend students, then every hundred years or so our library of American Literature will be completely different. Even today, modern day authors use vulgar language, lurid sexual content, and racial slurs to get their point across. If The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is taken off of required reading lists across the country, then that could create a never-ending cycle of books being taken off of school shelves every time words and ideas become unacceptable. If this is the way that American society is turning then something must be done, and the Superintendents, Deans, and Principals of every High School around the country must take it upon themselves to do it because the students will not.
Certainly this book is written for adults. The authour uses profanity and racial remarks, but it is necessary to tell the story in that manner. The bad language used by the characters shows their hate and anger, but also shows that some are willing to change their ways.
Have you ever read a book or an article in a magazine that you wouldn’t want your children to read? “A banned book is one that has been censored by an authority—a government, a library, or a school system. A book that has been banned is actually removed from a library or school system.” (Brogan Brunner)Some reasons people want books to be banned is because they have profanity, racism, murder, and sexism. Some reasons people don’t want books to be banned is because of the first amendment which is freedom of press and speech. They also think people should be able to read what they want. Some issues in Of Mice and Men are it has racial slurs and racism. It has a lot of profanity which some people don’t like to read and murder with euthanasia. Overall of mice and men should be banned from the schools.
Why should this novel be banned from use in schools? Students should be able to hear these words and talk about them and not use them offensively. Racial content, tension, and slurs are used in people’s everyday lives. If people can use these words outside of school why would they not be allowed to be talked about in school? It is important for everyone to be informed about these racial tensions. This book also shows the reader what is was like to be growing up in this time period. Although this book uses the n-word, it uses it in a historical way. Using these racist words explains the way of thinking of the south in the 1930s. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is appropriate to use and read in school.
I personally believe that the story, To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned in schools, and the story should be allowed in students’ curriculum. The first reason to why I believe this to be true would be the fact that it allows students the opportunity to learn about human mistakes and how to be better people in the future. A second reason would be that students are able to learn important parts of our history within the book. It also teaches students important morals that may be hard to teach without the context of a book such as this one.
Since the Civil War, racism has been a very delicate issue with the American public. Whereas some people have tried to transgress this issue, pretending that race no longer plays a significant role in our country, other people still believe that there are serious racial dilemmas in the United States. I am one these people. However, unlike some, I do not believe this problem can be solved by avoiding or sugarcoating the issue of race, as James L. Kilpatrick and several schools appear to be doing. In the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain presents an adventure story filled with deeper meanings and controversial topics, two in particular being slavery and racism. Despite the usage of the word "nigger" and the stereotypical portrayal of African Americans, I do not think schools have any justification in banning this book from reading lists.
For many years schools have banned books from being taught to their students because of parent complaints. These books have been shunned from the criteria, which may or may not affect the student’s understanding on a specific subject. People have been fighting to have these books banned because of excessive use of profanity, violence, sex, drugs and many other reasons. They do not look further in the books to see exactly what the author is trying to portray. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is banned in various places in the United States. This book should not be banned because, this book shows an important part in our history, it is not pro-racism, and it shows how far along we have come since then.
In 1865 Mark Twain wrote what would become one of the most controversial books in American history, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” He wrote this novel with brazen confidence. This novel became a very difficult, controversial topic with many different views and opinions. The most common side taken for this topic is the side that: Yes, it is a racist book, but that was the norm for the time. Addressing people by the “N” word was socially acceptable, and usually was not even done in a hateful manner, because it was the vernacular of this time. Many people’s aversion to this book makes this topic and discussion so much more interesting and in today’s standards, it is definitely racist. No doubt. But how are we going to learn from our mistakes in the past if we aren’t being taught them in the first place. It allows the readers, or in this case students, to see what intolerance is and how things have changed from then to today. Many of the novels in this time period are now considered racist, but were once were completely normal. There are many arguments as to why this novel should be banned from public high schools, but for every argument there is a reason as to why it is false and should still be taught.Due to these facts, the novel Huckleberry Finn should be taught in public school systems without question.
In conclusion, the novel The Catcher In the Rye must be banned from the eighth grade curriculum. The story is a negative influence to young readers. It contains countless profane words. Lastly the amount of sexual references is absurd for an eighth grade classroom. Schools, as well as teachers must realize the undesirable content of this novel and protect, the student from its damaging influences.
To accurately determine what an educational institution should do with a book that contains some degree of cultural or moral shock is to analyze what the purpose of these institutions actually is. “Some parents brought the town’s segregated past and their dissatisfaction with the present into the discussion about the book” (Powell, 1). It is true that people from areas where slavery once ran rampant will be emotionally distressed with books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This may be understandable, but ultimately, schools are not purposed to dampen the discomfort of specific students and their families. Education Assistant Professor Jocelyn Chadwick states, “‘you have to remind them you are there to defend the text and not solve social issues’” (Powell, 1). Alleviating the cold reality from members of the community is neither a responsibility of educators nor a pedagogical concern. For the teachers and professors, the education of students, through whatever methods and textbooks, should far outweigh any of the culturally or morally shaky backlash that could follow. However, some disagree with this. “The CHMCA officially objected to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn on the grounds that ‘the prejudicial effect of the racial characterizations outweigh any literary value that the book might have’...
In this time period most kids have access to learning about what they want from the internet. Books are a better source to learn information from. In the book ‘Of Mice and Men’ readers learn about things such as friendship, loneliness, and compassion. People seem to think that because this book contains foul language that kids should not be reading at school. Without this language the book would not be as good as it is and kids would not learn the valuable lessons it provides. In all, one reason kids should get to choose what they read with their parent’s consent is because it educated them on topics that will helps kids be better
You can not please everyone, so it's better to just please yourself. Huckleberry Finn has been a big controversy since it was published, People either find it offensive or helpful. The book tells the tale of a man and a teen who are both trying to escape their reality, there's only one problem Huck is a regular teenage boy who befriends a African American. Considering this took place in the 1800’s this was seen as dreadful. The book says the N-word all throughout the book which upsets some of its audience and which is why schools want to ban it. Schools should not have to ban this book because it teaches students about the past, you can't ban something that already happened, and most importantly it stands up to African Americans.
It has come to my attention that the book I read, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, has appeared on a number of banned book lists in schools and libraries across the country. Many have also tried to challenge this book, for a number of varying reasons. In this essay, I will talk about what the novel represents, where and why this American classic has been shot down in many schools across the country, and why I believe we should change that.
Such issues have supplemented the controversial nature of the book and in turn, have sparked the question of whether or not this book should be banned. The novel, The Catcher In the Rye, should not be banned from inclusion in the literature courses taught at the high school level. & nbsp;... ... middle of paper ... ... Banning books is unconstitutional.
Considering all of this, Of Mice and Men should not be a banned book because it provides readers with information that they can use in school or for later in life. Another thing is that John Steinbeck makes readers enjoy the book with details that bring you inside the story. Also because banning a book that contains euthanasia is not necessary because having something suffer would be much worse. Lastly Steinbeck’s book helps people understand the disabilities that people have. Don’t let this great book rot away with the other banned books!
