OCD is broken down into two components the obsession and the compulsion. The first component; obsession is when an individual is consistently having these reoccurring thoughts or images about a certain problem or issue in their life. For example; an individual that has OCD can have a constant thought or image about getting sick or dying from the various germs or diseases that people contract every day. So this individual goes to the extreme to make sure that they do not contract any of these germs or diseases. That is when the compulsive component begins. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a counselling model based greatly on talking therapy. It focuses on peoples underlying thoughts and past experiences, and how they influence current habits and behaviours. CBT tries to correct these and learn alternative ways of processing information to alter the undesired behaviour and/or habits. This is done through a combination of cognitive therapy (looking at the ways and things you think) and behavioural therapy (looking at the things you do).
Two very important aspects of OCD are obsession and compulsion. Clients will develop obsession which can be defined by the DSM as “recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some point during the disturbance as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress” (p.462). Compulsion is “repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels they should perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly” (DSM, 2000, p. 462).
There are treatments available for OCD patients to help cope. Before you can be treated, you have to be diagnosed. The Mayo Clinic diagnoses OCD in steps that may include a physical exam, lab tests, or a psychological evaluation. After you are diagnosed, there are a few different routes to take. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America believes that “untreated OCD can be detrimental to all aspects of life, so getting proper treatment is essential to taking control over the illness and gaining relief (OCD, n.d.).”
OCD has symptoms such as compulsive hoarding, extreme anxiety, depression, and food aversions.
