International Council of Nurses (ICN) defines that “nursing, as an integral part of the healthcare system, encompasses the promotion of health, prevention of illness and care of physically ill, mentally ill, and disabled people of all ages, in all health care and other community settings” (ICN, 2017, p.1). Becoming a nurse does not happen overnight. One must undergo years of study in order to be qualified as one. In my case, I am a registered nurse in my home country, The Philippines but due to stiff competition in the nursing workforce, I wanted to stretch my wings and found Australia as my destination. These learnings are of great help because it gave me background knowledge and skills that I can integrate and apply into practice in the actual clinical setting. Take for instance the Hand Hygiene Australia online package, I found out that the clinical settings here in Australia are so keen in observing the 5 Moments for hand hygiene and that there are statistics posted on the bulletin board about the compliance of all the healthcare workers concerning hand hygiene. With regard to the Mental First Aid module, finishing it gave me a clear understanding in dealing with a variety of clients, like patients who are stressed, elderly and mentally challenged. Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standard for practice states that “registered nurse practice is person-centered and evidence-based with preventative, curative, formative, supportive, restorative, and palliative elements” (NMBA, 2016, p.1). Accomplishing the online learning package for hand hygiene can enhance the preventative responsibility of nurses as well as student nurses by stressing the importance of performing the 5 Moments for hand hygiene which is the basic measure in order to prevent and control infection. Completing the Mental First Aid learning package would help nurses and student nurses in gauging how to deal with a variety of patients, i.e. physically ill, mentally ill and disabled patients. The module provided guidelines when to provide formative, supportive, and restorative care to different individuals.
