Commitment to “knowing” the client from a holistic perspective (4.1) was salient to respecting and recognizing the uniqueness of each resident. In the nursing situation described, the lack of commitment from the staff to incorporate and consider S.A.’s differences and values resulted in the client feeling neglected. Therefore, to promote health from a holistic perspective, I needed to establish a therapeutic relationship with S.A. to understand the root of her behaviours. For example, while getting to know the client, I learned that in her Indian culture, modesty and privacy is an important aspect of life as it carries a meaning of honour within the family. In S.A.’s situation, understanding the root of her frustration in the care being provided by the staff was crucial before attempting to make any changes. Moreover, before assuming elder abuse by the staff, I needed to recognize how depression and visual impairment may affect the client’s behaviour and attitudes such as through paranoia and delusions. To assess the client in a holistic manner while taking into consideration her complex health issues, I asked the following questions: “are there any cultural beliefs, and/or practices that impact your view of health and wellbeing?”, and “how has depression impacted your daily activities?” Therefore, in my journey towards becoming a future RN, I want to continue to ensure holistic nursing care. In a care facility that is short-staffed, many RNs and HCAs become task-orientated because of the time constraint (Jones, 2010). Despite this, a duty of the RN is to provide safe, compassionate, competent, and ethical care (Canadian Nurses Association, 2017). In using Leininger’s (1988) transcultural model, I can start to become culturally competent with the goal to provide culturally congruent holistic care.
