Having the quality of leadership in your nursing career is very important and is learned through experience, guidance, and practice. Demonstrating nursing leadership in my practice this first year of being an RN has been difficult and sometimes awkward. Through nursing school I was the follower, never the leader in real situations. It was a big change to going from being supervised to being the supervisor/charge nurse. Through this course this semester I have really learned some good take away points that I now use and practice frequently in my nursing practice.
There are three different career phases among nurses: promise, momentum, and harvest. I currently am in the promise phase as I am in the early start of my career. Promise phase represents the first 10 years of nursing employment. Nurses tend to be less experienced and are likely to experience reality overload (Marquis & Huston, 2015). The start of my career in health care as a Care Manager/TMA in an assisted living, I was responsible for managing personal care attendants (PCAs). Anytime conflict arose, I would try to avoid any confrontation. However, after taking Leadership I in nursing school, I became stronger and was able to push past those feelings of being overwhelmed or scared. In this current Leadership II course, I really delved into conflict management for the main reason that I am the charge nurse in my skilled nursing facility. I actually run into a lot more conflict between nursing aids that I ever thought I would. I really try to meet the ideal goal in resolving any conflict by creating a win-win siltation for those involved (Marquis & Huston, 2015). However, this is not always possible.
