Nursing homes are seen as a place where elderly men and women go when they can not take care of themselves anymore. It is the facility’s duty to offer a sense of comfort, enjoyment, and happiness to its residents. Visiting a nursing home is the best way to find out if that is true or not, because unfortunately that is not always the case. If it can not meet these simple notions listed below, it is not a qualified nursing home to accommodate the elderly. A proper facility should include a pleasant and healthy environment, staff that is passionate about helping residents, and a working team or system that can care for the elderly.
Expectations
When entering the nursing home, I expect to see many elderly people as well as the supporting staff. I also expect to see patient rooms, an activity center, and possibly a recreational lounge. They allow them to be individuals by giving them permission to decorate their rooms and doors. For example, some of the doors were decorated for Halloween while others had pictures of their family. Each room had different furniture and accessories that the resident had brought with them, but they were virtually set up the same way. The facility also offers various group activities such as bingo, therapy, and exercising classes. By doing that, they are allowing the residents to find an activity that they enjoy so they can invest themselves into it. I witnessed a few interactions between a resident and a staff member and they were all positive. The staff genuinely cares about the residents that live there, and it shows. When my group was walking down the hallways, the staff made sure that we moved to the side to allow a resident to pass through undisturbed. Again, they put the residents first before anything

With over 1.5 million elderly and dependent adults now living in nursing homes throughout the country, abuse and neglect has become a widespread problem. Even though some nursing homes provide good care, many are subjecting helpless residents to needless suffering and death. Most residents in nursing homes are dependent on the staff for most or all their needs such as food, water, medicine, toileting, grooming- almost all their daily care. Unfortunately, many residents in nursing homes today are starved, dehydrated, over-medicated, and suffer painful pressure sores. They are often isolated, ignored and deprived of social contact and stimulation. Because of insufficient and poorly trained staff commonly found in nursing homes. Care givers are often overworked and grossly underpaid that often results in rude and abusive behavior to vulnerable residents who beg them for simple needs such as water or to be taken to the bathroom.
Taking care of the individuals that are getting older takes many different needs. Most of these needs cannot be given from the help of a family. This causes the need of having to put your love one into a home and causing for the worry of how they will be treated. It is important for the family and also the soon to be client to feel at home in their new environment. This has been an issue with the care being provided for each individual, which has lead to the need of making sure individuals have their own health care plan.
These facilities are regulated by the state and federal government and these regulations protects the senior residents. For example it is mandatory for the facilities in Texas to provide mandatory services such as daily living activities like dressing, feeding or help prepare meals and cleaning. Depending on the facility license the staff would have to assist with financial management and certain medical services. Even though the federal government developed guidelines the state can make their own as long as it complies with the federal government. Some organizations may accept private pay while others accepted Medicaid. Regulations are developed to protect residence that from being in an unsafe environment. As a result some assisted living and nursing homes are unable to continue services by having fines or closing for an unknown amount of time. Since each state has different set of regulations I will focus on the state regulations in Texas because it is the state I reside in. The organization in Texas that regulates assisted living and nursing homes is the Department of Aging and Disability services(DADS).
In the case study, it starts out talking about a couple Juan and Maria who were immigrants from another country that came to the United States to move with their daughter (Carla), her husband (Soloman), and two grandchildren. Maria has diabetes and she pays for her insulin out-of-pocket, she’s worked as a housekeeper where they were paid cash. Juan has high blood pressure and high cholesterol, he receives help from the federal health center for his prescription. He worked as a janitor, at his job they were paid by salary, received Social Security and had a small amount of money put into his 401(k). On the other hand, neither of their jobs provided them with health insurance.
Though this checklist is not all encompassing it provides simple guidelines a person can easily look to in order to put his/her mind more at ease and feel secure in placing a loved one in a nursing home facility. Because there is no guarantee against elder abuse occurring in nursing homes it is important that the resident, where possible, and the family of the resident remain involved on a daily basis and demand the quality of care the elder person deserves.

In conclusion there needs to be an increase in government funding for long term care facilities to convey maximum ability to provide quality of care to elders and equal accessibility too homes and care. Ways that can produce this outcome are increases in staff funding for training and recruitment, as well as for equipment to help increase care. Government funding should also help elders decrease the cost of living in nursing homes and allow equal accessibility to homes and care in homes.
