Nursing Homes VS. Assisted Living Facilities. Many people confuse nursing homes with assisted living facilities, but there are several important differences between them. There is a very thin border, which separates the nursing homes from the assisted living facilities. The primary purpose of both of them is to provide medical care and assistance to the residents. However, there is a difference in the level of care provided in each of them, their eligibility criteria, privacy provided, their cost of living, amenities, social activities, and the coverage by the insurance. The similarity between a nursing home and an assisted living is that, both of them provide some level of medical care and accommodation to the residents. But the difference is in the type of care provided and the type of patients admitted. The patients admitted in a nursing home or an assisted living are called residents. The residents of a nursing home might require some assistance or complete care for the activities of their daily living; they might be alert or totally confused. With over 1.5 million elderly and dependent adults now living in nursing homes throughout the country, abuse and neglect has become a widespread problem. Even though some nursing homes provide good care, many are subjecting helpless residents to needless suffering and death. Most residents in nursing homes are dependent on the staff for most or all their needs such as food, water, medicine, toileting, grooming- almost all their daily care. Unfortunately, many residents in nursing homes today are starved, dehydrated, over-medicated, and suffer painful pressure sores. They are often isolated, ignored and deprived of social contact and stimulation. Because of insufficient and poorly trained staff commonly found in nursing homes. Care givers are often overworked and grossly underpaid that often results in rude and abusive behavior to vulnerable residents who beg them for simple needs such as water or to be taken to the bathroom.
With the aging population growing faster every year many families must make a difficult decision whether their loved ones should live in assisted living or nursing home facilities. I can relate because I made the decision to care for my mother at my home. Some people do not have the money or resources to care for their parent so they must live in a facility for health and safety reasons.
No one ever expects to live out his or her later years in life in a nursing home. When people are young they may not realize the obstacles in life that may cause them not to have a place or person to spend their older years in life with. Assisted living (AL) is a type of living arrangement that provides assistance to residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), housekeeping, meals, and transportation. The three biggest challenges that AL facilities face with organizational performance include occupancy rates, safety, and staff. According to the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care (NIC), the occupancy rate is continuing to fall nationwide for AL facilities due to inventory growth that outpaced healthy absorption rates (Holmes, 2017) (Bowers, 2017). Also, safety is a major issue for many AL facilities. Race, culture, religion and ethnicity all play a part in how we care for our elderly. Each family makes decisions based on background, experience, expectations, knowledge base, and economics. Most people would like to be able to care for their aging parent or spouse with as little disruption to lifestyle as possible. Alzheimer's Disease, however, is a full time commitment, not just eight hours a day, but "24/7", as the current idiom implies, the patient needs continuous care. Sleep habits are disturbed, wandering is common, medications must be carefully controlled, safety is always important. Home care soon becomes frustrating and exhausting if left to one or two caregivers. When the primary caregiver has his/her own medical needs to see to, is also aged, or is the parent of young children as well, the burden can become overwhelming. In-home care is a possibility as is placement in a live-in facility, but both are expensive alternatives.
There are many services provided for patients through in the medical field, but the ones I will be focusing on in this piece of writing are assisted living facilities. Assisted living facilities are care placement facilities for disabled or elderly people that provides nursing care, housekeeping, and cooks meals as needed for the patients. Specifically, assisted living in not designed for people who need constant professional nursing care, they provide services and health care to meet needs of individuals that need assistance in completing daily tasks.

Many older adults spend a lot of time in doors and some only get out a couple of days a week, some none at all, this can be bad as they need to still be able to socialise in care homes there are many other older adults that are in the same condition meaning they can socialise with them. Also care homes offer a lot of activities and games for the adults like recreational and interactive activities. Lastly care homes offer a lot of security to older adults. Many get very anxious over the thought of someone breaking into their house or being scammed. Although in a care home they wouldn’t need to worry about this.
Many seniors struggle with performing all of the daily tasks needed to live a safe, happy, and quality life. Even so, they want to live at home until they pass, or "age in place" as is it commonly called. Early on, home care services may have been able to help with many of the finer points of living, but when circumstances change and the senior cannot safely be alone throughout the day and night, what are they to do then? Another main advantage to nursing homes is their care, given every hour of the day. Most facilities have a staff including health care professionals all day, every day. Doctors are not always there during the night, but nurses watch the patients during the middle of the night. If the elder was being taken care of at home, it creates a problem for their children. An elder who has to have trained medics and supervision, nursing homes are the better place to live. The best facilities always have trained RN’s (Registered Nurses), LPN’s (Licensed Practical Nurses), and CNA’s (Certified Nursing Assistants.) If an emergency strikes, a physician or a psychiatrist will be there to handle it, and that ensures the family that their loved one is being taken care of. What should the government do to make better lifestyle and better treatments the residents of nursing homes deserve? So far, there has been a problem of trying to regulate safety and ensure nursing homes prioritizing care and responsibility on those residents. There has been staffs lacking responsibility for providing treatment, giving their medication, and especially keeping their facilities a clean environment. Overall, what caused is a massive concern of how the residents aren’t treated properly when they deserve to be. This are the basic day to day caring that a nurse performs at the hospital, nursing home and door to door services. The other one is long term care, this could be provided at home and it is the type of caring classified as weekly, monthly and annually. For example checkups, medication and over all counseling are considered to be a long term caring.
As people age and could no longer take care of themselves, some choose to stay in the nursing home, where a place a group of senile people lives together, to be looked after by the trained personnel, such as registered nurse. Some people have different thoughts on who are obliged for the elderly in needs. Some think it is the responsibility of the government, but some say it is the job of the children.
