My senior capstone unveiled more obstacles than I could have ever anticipated. It all started off rocky having to adjust to a new teacher with higher standards and expectations for my nursing class. I also challenged myself to go beyond my comfort zone and work with those whom I don’t normally work with, as well as learn about a topic I wasn’t necessarily comfortable with. I experienced first hand conflicts with my group members, advisor, and the overall project. Having to comply with the Emergency Medical System workers was our biggest obstacle. My research paper featured an interview where I was able to meet separately with an EMT at a school event; however, getting a hold of an EMT or paramedic while at work was difficult. I am really looking forward to this since it’s completely different compared to other programs and showcases our knowledge in Nursing Assisting. We are currently working on the stations for Capstone Night, and no personal assignments have been set in stone. I really hope to get the harder scenarios like draining a urinary drainage bag, applying a bedpan to a bedridden patient, or performing catheter care. I want to challenge myself and be able to feel more experienced for my CNA Certification. In class we are currently studying for our state exam and practicing our skills during the lab hours. There are two jars set up in the front of the classroom: one holds scenarios of the mandatory skills that will be used during CNA testing, and the other contains the potential skills that may be tested. Practicing is important because each CNA testing candidate is only given 35 minutes to complete 3-4 tasks, so our goal is to improve our speed and accuracy each class. Although our capstone changed, I am still happy to have been able to learn more about the Emergency Medical System and all that it has to offer. I hope our new one will reflect off the real-life N.A career and prepare us for our CNA licensure. I am really looking forward to seeing our performance at Capstone
I participated in project red with the Charge Nurse to promote quality improvement. The patient was going to be discharged from the hospital that day and was hospitalized previously for pulmonary pneumonia. I entered the room and introduced myself after I donned on my isolation precaution gear. I proceeded and entered with her instructions and computer on wheels. As I spoked with her she seemed like she was lost then I asked if she was understanding, she said “I prefer in Spanish”. I than continued to read the instructions about how to prevent pneumonia and how to treat it to her while translating them in Spanish. After, we spoke I made sure the charge nurse provided her Spanish written instructions. I than turned on the computer and started
D, my classmates, the skills book and videos were my influencing factors for this lab. I find the clinical learning centers to be exciting and places me in my professional work place. I should do everything as I would if I was in the hospital, nursing facility, or clinic. I recognize that we must be professional and act just as that. The CLC influences me to be the best I can be because it allows me to be in a realm of professionalism. This is to say, I should dress, behave, and listen as a professional nurse would. Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.

When I was working as a bedside nurse in the Emergency Department, in one of my duties I was not satisfied with the treatment plan made by a resident doctor for XYZ patient. He entered intravenous KCL (potassium chloride) for the patient. The purpose of that medication and its dose for that patient was not clear to me. I assessed patient history and came to know that a middle aged patient came with the complaint of loose bowel movements, vomiting, and generalized weakness. His GCS (Glasgow comma scale) was 15/15, looked pale but was vitally stable. Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Reflective Practice is a continuous action that directly affects anyone who is a practitioner. Jasper (2006, p. 53) stated that the benefits to the profession are the development of the nursing knowledge base and the recognition that nurses are contributing to both patient care and improved practice. Further, Jasper (2006, p. 43) explains that Reflective Practice is the foundation upon which reflection and reflective learning are based.
The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
A study conducted by academics found that undergraduate nurses feel reflection is the key to changing and improving their practice. (Bulman, Lathlean, & Gobbi, 2011). Reflection assists nurses to enhance their nursing abilities by encouraging them to reflect on negative experiences, in order to overcome similar experiences in the future. This essay will aim to demonstrate the importance of reflection within nursing, additionally providing me with a platform to reflect on my decision to become a nurse. The goal of my learning plan for this semester is to develop skills in health education specific to adolescents. I chose this as my learning goal because my placement this semester at Sunnybrook Hospital, Injury Prevention Program, gives me an opportunity to provide health education to high school students every Tuesday at out P.A.R.T.Y. Program so I thought I should use this opportunity to develop my and improve my nursing skills in this area. As well as good health education skills to adolescents can benefit the students by proving them a motivating learning environment and better learning outcomes. I hope they can enjoy my teaching and absorb the information and use them in the future. I have considered many factors in the process of developing my learning plan such as the nursing standards of health promotion, prevention and health protection, professional relationships, capacity building etc… I brainstormed possible topics such as possible topics that are related to injury prevention itself for example, concussion prevention or preventing sports related injuries. I also thought about doing topics that are relevant specifically to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program such as teenage suicide and prevention or distracted driving. After assessing my placement and the clients which in this case are the students, I have recognized that one of the program’s goals is to educate the students about injuries and injury prevention. I also found that our clients had a lot of potential in learning about this subject which can greatly benefit their lives and influence change in their behaviour to increase control of their own health and make better choices. I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
Reflection is an essential component in the development of professional competencies and critical thinking skills in nursing practice. Reflection in the context of nursing, has been described as a way of exploring an experience in order to look for the prospect of other explanations and alternative methods to doing things. It is through reflection that one can evaluate and identify their strengths and weaknesses to encourage both personal and professional growth and development. In this paper, I will be discussing how student nurses learn and develop from reflection, the emotional response and self-awareness as a nurse, and the appropriate way to reflect as a nurse.
The following essay is a reflective account on an event that I, a student nurse encountered whilst on my second clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a Fountain Nursing Home in Granite City. I have chosen to give thought to the event described in this essay as I feel that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective communication skills especially when treating patients that are suffering with a mental illness. Upon arriving to the Nursing home for the second time on Thursday November 14,2013; assigned the same patient as before. On meeting my patient the first thing I noticed myself doing without even thinking about it was giving her a visual inspection. Before nursing school I never really looked at someone at face value and inspected him or her physically. While interacting with my patient I felt as if I was taking to my grandmother, it was very comfortable and easy. Her neurological assessment was good, she had eye contact with me, was able to follow some simple commands such as showing me her hands and squeezing my fingers. Being in the nursing home-made me feel like there was so much medical information to acquire, I viewed it as my own personal practice space for my nursing skills.
