Identify the characteristics of the learner needed to perform the skills involved in the sport. Explain why these characteristics make them a good player.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LEARNER

Personality - An individual’s personality is resulted from their social interactions and learning experiences throughout life. Netball is a team sport, therefore to enhance the ability to effectively work as a team, it is essential that all players co-operate with each other using their communication skills. Players may also find themselves more motivated to do well when they are enthusiastic or interested in playing netball because of their positive attitude towards the sport and teammates. Netball is also a non-contact sport which means that it is important for players to show good sportsmanship towards their teammates, opposing team and umpires for a fair game. It is also the players level of determination that will persist them in playing to the best of their ability.

Prior experience - Having previous experience in a sport which uses similar qualities is an advantage compared to learning a new skill. In netball it would be useful for individuals to have hand-eye coordination in order to catch the ball. For example, a person who has expereience with playing basketball would be more successful with the concept of throwing and catching a ball in the game of netball. Their agility skills would also be more advanced compared to a beginner as they are more familiar with the ability to dodge or stick to their opponent.

Ability - The ability of a player will vary according to the individual as it depends on their process to implement new skills. It would be extremely useful for players to have a quick reaction time towards decision making whil...

Flexibility - Static stretching
Static stretching is one of the most safest form of stretching and it consists of slow smooth movements that are performed without discomfort and is to be held for approximately 10-30 seconds. It is mainly used in warm up and cool downs which is why this type of stretching is essential in netball. Static stretching assists the players physical fitness as their muscles are more relaxed, it prevents injuries from occurring, allowing them to play a safe game. An example of a stretch which ultimately allows the muscles to become more relaxed is the sit and reach. This stretches the lower back and hamstring which prevents the player of further injury.
