Many people benefit mentally, and physically from maintaining or returning to employment. This can range from seeking out financial stability all the way to building up good self-esteem. All of these attributes that many seek, and achieve through hard work, others get adverse effects. In the work force today stress in the work place has become an ever-increasing issue for many employed people. People who suffer from poor mental health such as depression or anxiety that end up in a negative working environment can actually lead them to have worsening physical, and mental health. A healthy workplace, according to “World Health Organization” is one that “can be described as one where workers and managers actively contribute to the working environment by promoting and protecting the health, safety and well-being of all employees.”. Organizations have the responsibility to give support to individuals that have mental disorders in either continuing or returning to work. Research shows that unemployment, mostly long-term unemployment can have a harmful impact on mental health. Many of these initiatives will help people in the long run with mental disorders. “Those in unhealthy work environments tend to gain more weight and have more healthcare appointments. That being said there is an increasing amount of stress, but a decreasing amount of support from employers which in turn is hurting their business by having unmotivated stressed out employees. According to “Mental Health America” less than a third of American citizens are genuinely content with their occupations” which is something employers could help with and would benefit by being leaders who are considerate of an employee's workload by not giving them unreasonable deadlines and work overload which in turn will result in a better employee who is less stressed. Choosing when and where they work can also be helpful. Ever since a few years ago, employees were given the right to ask for flexible hours, anything from choosing your shifts to working from home.
