In a time where technology soaring, electronic communication has become the main way to talk to others. Whether it is applying for a job, having a meeting, talking to loved ones or sharing photos, almost everything is communicated electronically. But, how does this type of communication effect human interaction? Electronic communication has increased the number of people we can communicate with, while decreasing the amount of time it would take. Although this is an amazing advancement in the field of communication, it has begun to diminish the amount of actual face to face time people participate in. A group kids hanging out after school used to consist of sitting in a garage, with some music in the background, some jokes being thrown around and a flow of conversation and a family dinner included parents and children around the table finding out about each other’s days, but that all different now. Instead of conversations among friends and families, children and adults have their phone, laptop or tablet attached to their hands, eyes glued to the screen and maybe even headphones in to block everything else out. Quentin Deakin, a specialist in the field of technology, believes that technology itself is not the problem, but the way people use it (348+).
The improvements are communication are extraordinary and should be used to help with communicating, but we have become dependent on the use of texting and social media as our primary source of communication instead. It is great for education, but once the child reaches maybe 8 years old, able to communicate with a phone or tablet, they stay inside, speak to friends electronically, speak to parents the same.
