For many years, many Americans have told others to speak American. Indeed, it sounds strange for someone to think American is a language. What those people mean is for you to speak English. Let's take a step back, and look at the history the United States. The first people living in America were Spanish and Native American. Half of our country spoke Spanish, while the other half spoke Native American languages and many spoke indigenous languages. Many Native Americans have seen a decrease in the native language speakers during recent years, so if they see that problem right now. Imagine the future for them and how they will feel if schools stop teaching students in their native language. Their native language would be extinct and their next generation will leave this planet without knowing how beautiful the language their ancestors was until it lasted. Our younger generation would be the only one knowing just one language, and if we are being quite honest there is nothing special about it. Indeed, those children will lose the privilege of speaking more than one language. We would see more people migrate to other countries that will accept their native language without judging them. Because what they thought was a free country just became like the rest of the countries, countries people tried to escape from many years. Even one of our presidents John Adams claimed, “That the desires of the majority of the people are often for injustice and inhumanity against the minority, is demonstrated by every page of the history of the whole world” (English as an Official Language in the U.S.: Pros and Cons). We would make other languages (includes cultures and people) in the minority, why should we take the identity from them because of ignorant people in our country. People should take some time out of their day to look up the history of our country and facts for them to see American as they say is not a
