The majority of Americans believe English is the official language of the United States. However, The United States has no official language at all. This mistake is commonly based upon English being the most popular language spoken in North America. Making English official has recently become a popular topic, and more people every day join a curiosity of why it is not the official language. English should be the official language of the United States to give the people what they want, to recognize the historic role, and to limit controversy. English should be the official language of the United States to give the citizens what they want. Some citizens of the United States are completely oblivious to the lack of an official language. If the United States is “run by the people” then should not the voice of Americans not only be heard but also acted upon? According to the U.S. census of 2012, 87% of Americans believe that English should be the official language of their proud country(Pro English). Even the states that make up the U.S.A. agree that English should become national. These states began a movement by making their official state language English. In the United States, there are currently 31 states possessing the official language of English(Krauthammer pg.145). Interesting enough, the majority of people who argue against English becoming official believe it would offend the American people. The age old question that many ask today is “what is an American?” America is continued to be called the “melting pot” of the world. This statement refers to the combination of different cultures and ethnicities throughout the United States. American history and tradition is falling, and the ground on which she was founded is slowly fading. Americans must wake up to the importance of preserving the history of their culture. America is considered to be the greatest country in the world by even some who are not Americans. The “American Dream” is something people fantasize over all around the world. In order to keep the desire to be American, one must truly understand what it takes to be American. English is essential in living the American life. English should be the official language of the United States to give the people what they want, to recognize the historic role, and to limit controversy.
