Long ago in class we briefly delved into the use of personality testing in the workplace when Jillian Overstreet gave her presentation on the Myers-Briggs personality test. As a psychology major, I am no stranger to tests like Myers-Briggs because personality tests were definitely part of many syllabi. Personality tests is a type of psychological testing that evaluate attitudes, emotions, and behavioral traits that makes up a personality. Results from these tests can help determine a person’s specific personality strengths and weaknesses, and also identify disturbances in personality. A personality test is a type of SWOT analysis that enables to employer to assess who the candidate is behind the resume and skills. You get to see more of the behaviors, emotions and attitudes in regards to creativity, maturity, or motivation of the applicants. The employer can assess if the candidate has attributes that the company values or if the threats that accompanies a candidate are not too severe and is something the company can work with. It as create transparency in the sense that you can see what people might be trying to hide. Questions can be phrased such that the candidate is not able to guess which answer will sound more appealing to the employers such as: “choose one of the following that best describes you: ‘There is more to life than having money and being successful.’ or ‘It is very important to always thank service people’” (Begley, Trankiem, and Hansel …show more content…

The applicant or whoever chooses to take a personality test gets to understand and conceptualize his or her abilities, a better level of self- awareness and reminder of skills you already have, or learn of other skills to possibly better develop. A personality test can enable the applicant to do a personal SWOT analysis and be aware of their strengths and challenges which can be helpful for interviews. Another useful feature of personality test is that it can match personalities to various possible career paths. This feature can be valuable when searching for the right job, where you enjoy what you are doing. It can make the hunt for the right job shorter and efficient. This is also a winning situation, so why not give personality test a chance.
