Have you ever experienced something extremely tough and difficult to cope with in your life? A situation that made you feel weak and defenseless? These types of situations can range from suffering from an extreme illness,such as cancer, or injury, such as a broken bone, to the death of an important family member to difficulties involving school; all are still valid hardships. I am sure most of us have gone through something similar in our lives. The truth of these situations is that in the end they will make us stronger, tougher and more resilient. Sara was formerly a lawyer but gave it up to be a full-time mother. Her entire life was completely shattered in 1990 when she first learned that her daughter, Kate, was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia; a type of cancer. She didn’t want what the doctor informed her to be true; “I want to shake Dr. Farquad. I want to tell her I will draw the blood for the coag panel myself from Kate's arms if it means she will take back what she said”(Picoult, 33). Sara was in disbelief. She knew her life would never be the same and , out of desperation, felt as if she would do anything to have what the doctor said, about Kate having cancer, to not be true. Strength, resilience, and knowledge is what Sara was forced to gain to get through each day with a child with cancer. She was forced to learn how to medically deal with her daughter as long as emotionally; learning about bone marrow transplants, promyelocytes, molecular relapses, and so on. Mrs Fitzgerald learned greatly along the way, Sara desperately tried to be the best mother she could be but ended up making a more than a few mistakes; such as neglecting her two other children, Jesse and Anna.
