“You’ve got to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer” is a phrase that African immigrants stereotypically dictate to their children because they want their children to have a better life than they did even if these children have no real passion or drive to be in these high paying professions. While I am sure that my parents secretly also held these desires, they did their best to give me the latitude to make my career decision by myself rather than attempting to force feed me a list of careers that would make them proud. I am glad they did this because I was quite rebellious as a teenager and if they had attempted to confine me into one of those paths I probably would not have developed the skills or thirst for knowledge that I have now. As someone who has a natural aptitude for math and science subjects, it was natural that I would gravitate towards something science …show more content…
I aspire to become a medical doctor who conducts clinical trials in the future so that we understand the mechanisms behind various mental and neurological issues so that people don’t have to spend thousands of dollars cycling through medications until they find something that works. I am doing everything that I can to reach that goal even though it isn’t easy. I live with my father and two younger brothers so I have assumed the role of a housewife in my home and do most of the cooking and cleaning. One of my brothers is autistic which means he requires even more time and attention but caring for him benefitted me in a number of ways. He has made me more aware of the issues affecting people with cognitive disabilities, it has helped my communication skills and he also forces me to pay close attention to detail. I want to have a secure career so that I’ll be able to afford to take care of him when my father stops

I am thrilled to know that I will be capable of caring for sick children.
Growing up, my parents stressed and lecture hard work and the importance to become a respected person in the STEM field. To be a doctor, lawyer, or pharmacist was the most important for them, to be able to glorify

The happiness in an adults’ life tends to have a strong correlation with their happiness in their career. Generally the things people are exposed to throughout their lives highly affect their career choices. I want to be a teacher, but I also want to watch my students grow. Being a dance teacher in their own studio would give one the opportunity to grow with their students. In doing so, depending on the relationships made with their students, they would be the one influencing and encouraging their students college decisions. I would like to be a teacher who makes an impact on my students, like some of the dance teacher I have had in my life. The motivation I have gotten from my dance teacher has been phenomenal, I am basing my life decisions on the decisions they have made. I want to be a teacher my students can look up to and confide in. If it wasn’t for my current dance teacher Jenna Petroff, I don’t think I could have made it through my senior year. I plan to make relationships with my students that I will still remember when I am retired,I want to have a career that people will be amazed with. Imagine being at a gathering with some other teachers, their reactions to you telling them you not only own and manage your own studio, but that you also teach there. as well as at a high school They will be astounded at the fact that you can manage so much, and still be successful and happy. Being a dance teacher will be natural for me, it’s what I have done my entire life, I will be happy with nothing less.
The enthusiasm I have for the sciences - specifically Chemistry - encouraged me to think about
Ever since I was young I looked up to all my teachers as great role models and knew that that was what I wanted to have a career in. I made the decision to major in Social Science mainly because history has always interested me. I love learning about the past, especially our countries history and how we got to the place we are today as well as learning about ancient empires from around the world. I also have always had an interest in our government system as well as psychology. In our school, our history teachers have always given us a fun way of learning rather than through lectures. I think that is important to students because it lets them learn better and easier by having different projects. I hope to be the same type of teacher like they are throughout my career.
Ever since I was a little girl, I always said that I wanted to be a doctor, when I grow up. In high school as part of my required volunteer hours, I decided to dedicate my time at the Houston Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land. I choose to volunteer at a hospital rather than a pet shelter because the hospital is where I see myself in the future. The hospital for me is a place that brings joy to my heart, knowing that hopefully one day I’ll be able to save someone's life. My academic goals include earning a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a minor in Spanish and Biology. Upon my graduation, I plan to attend medical school, where I will specialize in rheumatology. With regards to my career goals, I plan to become a rheumatologist and provide the best possible medical treatment for Lupus patients. To reach my goal of one day becoming a doctor I have decided to pursue an eight-year college education, starting at the University of Houston.
Growing up in Africa taught me to always reach for greater things in life. African parents always feel like their children should become doctor, lawyers, or engineers. I do not know if it is all because people in those fields make good money, or if they have other reasons to explain their thoughts. Maybe they just want their children to have a better future than they did. For me, choosing nursing was not difficult because both of my parents worked in the in the medical field.
Right from school, I had a penchant towards Mathematics and Science. This basic interest led me to take up Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as
As I reflect and look at my career journey, I realize that I have not really had a career journey. I have held a few jobs; however, I have not had a job I would consider my career yet. Furthermore, I only worked for a couple of months in each of the jobs I had in the past. Currently, I do not have a job yet, and I realize that I am now 24 years of age and should be starting my way to my career. However, I have not looked into jobs in my career field because I feel as though I am not ready yet to start working in my field.
