Music continues to be a colossal part of everyone’s lives and how we express our feelings and emotions. However, music is defined by sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments. This definition alone does not create a full understanding of what music really is. Sounds with rhythm do not make the music but the emotional connection and the feelings that come along with it, do. As the audience listens to the songs that are played, they come to realize the connection they experience with it. This simple song then becomes music. Without this unexplainable bond and the craving the audience experiences with the song, music is not present. Making someone feel something, positive or negative, and aiding them to relate to their unforeseen emotions or worldly aspirations and goals creates music. When an artist’s begins to construct a new song, they choose the audience they are approaching and how they want to connect with them. If these songs did not connect with the audience in a different level then it wouldn’t be music. Therefore, people would not listen to it. Music creates entertainment but while listening to each song the audience relates to it in some way. Relations do not just have to deal with similarities but also the opposite ideas and thoughts one has. While a person disagrees with these opinions or ways of life, they begin to create their own based on what they have heard. Rock and roll, written as rock ‘n’ roll, music was fully born in the 1950’s and formed from electric blues and gospel music. Rock and roll is characterized by electric guitars, a strong rhythm and youth-orientated music. This music became popular because of the children of the decade. Parents called this type of music “noise.” While parents were listening to calm music, their children were listening to rock n roll.

Music is in films to elicit emotion and in television commercials to make us consumers of the newest technology. More importantly, it is in our preferred listening device because we choose the particular songs and artists we like and want to hear. The Marriam-Webster dictionary defines music as “sounds that are sung by voices or played on musical instruments; the art or skill of creating or performing music.” But why do we choose attend the Bruce Springsteen concert at Wrigley Field and not the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? What makes us enjoy one type of music or artist and not another? Whether you make music or simply enjoy it by listening to it, we are all connected to music in a variety of ways.
Music is that one friend that will always be there and will never judge us. It changes and has a huge impact on lives tremendously.
