People do usually have to be strong to be brave. But people must realize that they can portray themselves as brave by just doing some trivial things like saving a cat. few people are brave on the inside themselves. Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose is a sweet person from inside but is unable to express her feelings and her addiction simply adds on to the troubles run on. Mrs. Dubose is nice to everyone in her own way, but nobody can see it. Jem used to go to her house every day to read her a story, but he never understood her. The gift that Jem received by Mrs. Dubose “was a white, waxy, perfect Camellia” (Lee, 148). It shows that Mrs. Dubose wanted to make Jem realize his mistake, so he can be aware and cautious in the future. At the same time, she gave it as a present to thank him for helping her overcome her addiction. Mrs. Dubose was sitting on her porch when Jem and Scout went by. She stopped them on their way for playing hooky. “It is noon and hot outside, so both of you go inside your house otherwise I will call you principle” # said, Mrs. Dubose. Jem and Scout told that they have been alone to town, but she never believed them. In a sense, Mrs. Dubose worried for the children and at the same time, she was angry at them. Dubose bravely tried to break her addiction to morphine. Even though she knew there is a small chance of success, she tried it anyway. Her addition was getting worst day by day, but she slowly understood that she could get rid of it by diverting her attention to different things. When Jem use to come to her house and read the books the duration of time was getting a bit longer every day. The amount of time was increasing every day. Atticus describes her as the bravest person he knew. He describes courage, “It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee, 149).
