”Courage doesn’t mean that you’re fearless, courage means you don’t let fear stop you.” This explanation of courage, stated by Bethany Hamilton, describes a very similar definition of courage as the one Atticus believes and enforces. Atticus has also made a connection to this in the book, stating, “I want you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand,” (Lee 149). He said this as he talked to his son about a dying neighbor in the book. In the novel, Mrs. Dubose, the neighbor, exemplifies courage through her perseverance, her determination, and her bravery to end the tyranny of her morphine superior.

Dubose exhibits determination in the novel, because she always stays determined to get off the drugs, no matter the consequences. Again, Atticus is speaking with Jem right after Mrs. Dubose died. They were talking about how Mrs. Dubose wanted to die beholding to nothing and nobody. During this conversation, Atticus states, “According to her views, she died beholding to nothing and nobody,” (Lee 149). This quote means that Mrs. Dubose died without the help of drugs or other people, and died as free as she could be. This is significant because it shows how determined she was to get off the drugs and die without any regrets or consequences. This connects to the point because she needed courage to continue fighting the urge to get back on drugs.

Mrs. Dubose shows courage in the novel through her bravery. Like before, Atticus and Jem are speaking about Mrs. Dubose’s courage. While speaking, Atticus says, “...she died beholding to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew,” (Lee 149). This quote means that Mrs. Dubose needed a lot of courage and bravery to get off of the morphine. This is significant because it shows that she had bravery, and bravery is very closely connected to courage.
