Over time, the modern family model has changed in a variety of ways; when it comes to families, the social norms are greatly different than they were only a couple decades back. With these changing times, it makes it harder for there to be a definite definition as to what a modern family truly entails. The following subtopics are all responsible for this changing modern family model:
1. Decrease in infant mortality- with highly developed healthcare technologies, there are now diagnosis and treatments that can be preformed even while a baby is still in utero. With that, it gives a much better chance at survival for newborn babies. Also, there are reproductive technologies to combat infertility, which help allow the manipulation of genetic factors before conception (Conley, 2013, p.423). From my studies in my biology classes, parents can even dictate things as little as eye color. Unfortunately, we did not have such technologies in the past and because of that, the infant mortality rate was much higher, therefore making the risk of having children much lower nowadays in that particular sense. With this, it allows for people to engage in sexual activity with less of a worry about unwanted pregnancies. While it does not guarantee full immunity from pregnancies, it gives a certain degree of certainty. Some earlier beliefs, which are still around today, believe that the engagement of sexual intercourse before marriage is unacceptable. But now, it is more acceptable, and with these advancements it gives people more freedom to act upon particular urges. Teens need sex education because the knowledge will give them an insight on the subject and help them think about the proper precautions to take in order to be a responsible person insuring that they use the right contraception and/or abstinence in order for them not to have children as a teen. Other factors play into why teens become pregnant as well. In the results for my interviews, parent/child relationships should be established and upheld as a relationship that is strictly parent and child. Teens who do not have a true parent/parents in their lives to care about the important thing that contribute to the child’s well being such a becoming pregnant at a young age, tend to make decisions that are not healthy in their lives.

Times have changed since our parents were children and families today face different challenges than those of a decade or two ago. Over the past few decades the concept of family has been revolutionized. A "traditional" family no longer consists of two parents of the opposite sex in which the father is the "breadwinner," and the mother stays at home to raise the children. Today's family is as diverse as the world it must exist in. The important thing about today's family is that success does not just happen; a strong family takes effort.
Several changes have occurred since the 1920s in traditional family values and the family life. Research revealed several different findings among family values, the way things were done and are now done, and the different kinds of old and new world struggles.
As we have learned through Skolnick’s book, as well as Rubin’s research, the make up of the family is influenced by many factors. The economy, culture, education, ethnicity/race, and tradition all help to create the modern family. The last few decades have heavily influenced the family structure, and while some try to preserve the past, others embrace the future. Through it all, we find you can have both.
Unprotected sex is becoming increasingly common today which brings an increase in the risks of the effects; including pregnancy, social discrimination, and various diseases. The majority of unprotected sex is acted upon within teenagers. However, adults act upon this feat as well. While performing sexual proceedings, you use a condom to prevent the corrupting effects due to unprotected sex from happening to you. In the absence of using a condom, the effects are amplified. Most people are aware of the consequences of unprotected sex, although, the choice of using a condom to protect you during sexual intercourse is still not always the prevailing decision. Furthermore, people may not be fully aware of the serious impacts of unprotected sex and only know the minor hearings of them. The severities of the results are sometimes downplayed by other people who make them seem like careless effects that can never happen to them. They are unconsciously overlooked and only thought of as stories being told and not necessarily reality. Unfortunately by this time though, it is usually too late to fix the mistakes from your previous actions.
