Over time, the modern family model has changed in a variety of ways; when it comes to families, the social norms are greatly different than they were only a couple decades back. With these changing times, it makes it harder for there to be a definite definition as to what a modern family truly entails. The following subtopics are all responsible for this changing modern family model:
1. Decrease in infant mortality- with highly developed healthcare technologies, there are now diagnosis and treatments that can be preformed even while a baby is still in utero. With that, it gives a much better chance at survival for newborn babies. Also, there are reproductive technologies to combat infertility, which help allow the manipulation of genetic factors before conception (Conley, 2013, p.423). From my studies in my biology classes, parents can even dictate things as little as eye color. Unfortunately, we did not have such technologies in the past and because of that, the infant mortality rate was much higher, therefore making the risk of having children much lower nowadays in that particular sense. Changes in human sexuality- along with the advances in medicine comes the ability to help prevent contraception. With this, it allows for people to engage in sexual activity with less of a worry about unwanted pregnancies. While it does not guarantee full immunity from pregnancies, it gives a certain degree of certainty. Some earlier beliefs, which are still around today, believe that the engagement of sexual intercourse before marriage is unacceptable. But now, it is more acceptable, and with these advancements it gives people more freedom to act upon particular urges. These methods are not full proof, which in turn can lead to more unplanned pregnancies.
