My aspiration to be a clinical psychologist stems from my desire to further my education, expertise, and experience as a mental health professional following the completion of my Master’s degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. My ultimate career goal is to help people with psychiatric challenges by becoming a licensed clinical psychologist and to specialize in treatment and assessment. Through my experience at Anixter Center, I provided individual and group counseling to a variety of individuals with different ability levels in a day mental health setting. Currently, I work as a vocational counseling intern at New Connections Academy, a therapeutic day school for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder or related disorders. I conduct individual vocational counseling sessions with my caseload in order to assist the students identifying and working towards post-secondary goals. I currently hold a position in an electroencephalogram research lab where my cohort investigates the relationship between neural electrical activity and the presenting symptoms that individuals exhibit. Currently, the lab is utilizing EEG equipment to investigate the relationship between alpha level activity and an individual’s Post Traumatic Stress Symptoms. Further understanding of any potential correlations between neural activity and expressed symptoms can aid in the treatment of an individual from both a traditional psychotherapeutic basis as well as by using neurofeedback in the attempt to alleviate an individual’s presenting problem(s). This experience demonstrated the continual need for research and updating the clinical implications that such findings may have upon individuals seeking treatment. It also demonstrated the need for professionals in the field to continue to be educated consumers of research to incorporate the most evidence-based practices into their treatment
