Professionalism is something many people have a sense of but many find it difficult to interpret their thoughts about it into words. For some, being professional might mean dressing appropriately for the situation, or doing a good job. For others, being professional means portraying an image of yourself that leaves a positive impression. Professionalism encompasses all of these definitions. But, it also covers much more. True professionals possess a number of important characteristics that render them attractive during medical school interviews. One of these characteristics is authenticity. Medical school professionals who are a part of the application committee are well experienced in the interview process. Through this experience, these professionals will certainly recognize distinctive social and behavioral cues indicating inauthenticity. Although it is important to be yourself, professionals also understand when to show parts of their personality, and at the appropriate time. It is a significant achievement in the application process to be invited for an interview at a medical school. At this point, the applicant is appealing on paper. The interview process is an opportunity to showcase other skills, traits, and characteristics that serve as an opportunity to leave a lasting impression. In order to solidify this impression, it is essential that the medical school applicant acts in a professional manner, demonstrating all of the characteristics discussed above.
