A SWOT Analysis can be powerful to any company. The SWOT analysis for PetSmart allows them to expose opportunities that otherwise could be missed ("SWOT Analysis," n.d.). An additional benefit of a PetSmart SWOT analysis is gives the company an understanding of their weaknesses, which can result in a competitive edge for its competitor. Understanding strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threat as a company will give PetSmart an advantage over a company who chooses to ignore this type of analysis. Macys was founded in 1858 as a dry good store. Rowland Hussey Macy had opened numerous retail stores however, one after the other showed to be a disappointment and enviably had to close. Macys was his only store that successfully took off and remained opened. Macys was known for making numerous firsts to the retail business such as implementing a one price system which meant that the same item was sold to everyone, they were also the first to introduce the Idaho baked potato to consumers as well as were the first to hire a woman to a upper executive role.

The company operates under the renowned brand of Macy’s Inc and Bloomingdales. It is broken into four main areas with Macy’s.com being the headquarters, Bloomingdale and bloomingdale.com. The four spread across 800 departmental stores in over 45 states with most of them being strategically located in urban that enable it to reach to its segment of customers. Macy’s Inc has an employee base of 167,000 who serve their annual clients totaling to 50 million annually.
Another problem was that Kmart did not correctly anticipate customer needs. For instance, let's say that Kmart buys a new style of shirt and stocks it in pink, yellow, green and blue. Further, let's say that the blue shirts sell out immediately; the store is left with inventory of the three other colors. Yet Kmart doesn't reorder the blue ones because 75 percent of its inventory is still unsold – it's still got plenty of that style of shirt to sell. Wal-Mart, meanwhile, would order a new shipment of blue shirts. Their model takes the customer into account, not the inventory – Wal-Mart understands that it's the color the customers want, not the style (in this case, anyway).
