The Army is the branch of armed services responsible for military land operations. They are one of the best at serving and helping our country on U.S. soil, and overseas. They use prepared, swift, and forceful tactics to overcome the enemy, but it wasn’t always like this. The Army used to be men called “minute men” who would go into battle in a minutes notice. The Army has changed over the years from the late 1700’s, to the time that we are at now. The Second Continental Congress formed the first Continental Army on June 14th, 1775. George Washington was appointed the first Commander-in-Chief. This division was to use helicopters and airplanes to support its ground troops. Beginning in 1982, the Army began to manufacture the M65 field coat with woodland camouflage. The M16 was ordered as a replacement for the M14. The initial version of the M16 was first adopted by the Air Force in 1964. The M16A2 entered service in the mid-1980’s and fired a NATO standard M855 or M865 5.56 cartridge. A combination of the M16A4 and M4 carbine began replacing the M16A2. To prevent further aggression in Iraq, the United States Army began sending troops into Saudi Arabia during the Iraq War. Beginning in 2001, an international force led by the United States attacked the Taliban. The Army introduced the Personal Armour System for ground troops, which consisted of Kevlar helmet and ballistic vest. In 2011, US special forces killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The Army has changed over the years since the late 1700’s, to where we are now. Even though they have gone over many changes, they have been able to defend us and others all around the globe.
