After The Seven Years’ War things began to change for the colonists. The war was extremely expensive for England, doubling the national debt. In order to pay off the debt the colonists were taxed. After failed attempts to protest against England things became violent, thus igniting The Revolutionary War. The Americans fought in The American Revolution and the War of 1812 in order to gain independence from England. They were able to be victorious on both occasions because they had a united front and England was spread then in global wars. The relationship between the Colonists and England deteriorated through out the 1760’s and the 1770’s. The Articles of Confederation were the first government of the United States and were a compromise between strong and weak government. The Articles of Confederation gave the federal government the power to declare wars, handle international affairs, manage Indians if they live outside of states, handle disputes between states, and handles the post office. Limitations of The Articles of Confederation include being unable to raise taxes and cannot raise an army. After the war there was a recession, the American people became angry. There were wide spread street demonstrations and violence. Under The Articles of Confederation, the U.S. federal government did not have the power to do anything about the recession or the violence because those issues were designated for the states to handle. Leaders began to realize that something must be done and amending the articles was not the answer. In May of 1787 the Constitutional Convention was held in Philadelphia. Fifty delegates met behind closed curtain with no outsiders until a conclusion was made on how to precede with the new government. Early in the convention Alexander Hamilton gave a 6-hour speech outlining his plan for new government. Hamilton was an extreme federalist and advocated for a strong central government. The British had not left American territory in the Northwest. The British encouraged native Americans to fight against the United States and also provided them with weapons. England was in the middle of the Napoleonic Wars with France. Even though the United States was neutral in the war the British intercepted American ships and rerouted them to Britain and away from France. The British also kidnapped American Sailors and forced them in serve in the royal navy. In the 1810 congressional elections a new type of politician came to power. This new politician was younger, born after the American Revolution. They never knew life as a British colonists and didn’t have any loyalties to the British. They view the United State’s relationship with England as a weakness and urged the United States to get rid of the British in the western American territory. This new generation of politicians were called the War Hawks. The War Hawks constantly pressured Madison to declare war on the British and in June of 1812 Madison caved. The United States was fighting to ensure their Atlantic trade, to get the British out of US territory, and to clear out the Indians. Despite the British were winning the war The Treaty of Ghent was signed on Christmas Eve of 1814. The British agreed to a peace treaty because the war was becoming to expensive for them to continues.
