The Middle Ages is used to describe the time for European history. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the period of the Renaissance. The Middle Ages covers roughly 3 different western history periods; classical antiquity, medieval period, and modern period. Religion played a huge part during this time period. During this era, all life (peasants, nobles, and even the king) was dominated by Christianity. The Roman Empire considered Christians as a threat, since many people refused to worship the Roman Gods or emperor. This led to the execution of many Christians. During the early Middle Ages, the only form of Christianity accepted was the Catholic religion. With their on laws, taxes, and land, the Catholic Church was very powerful. Life was very difficult during the Middle Ages. During this time, people were dictated by wealth, power, and status in the European era. Most people were unable to read or write, and as people moved to rural areas, learning became less important. Peasants, including serfs and villains spent most of their days working and living in the village, and were unable to leave their land without the lords permission. Men were seen to be the head of the household, and held most authority in the house. Their roles solely focused on how much land they owned and wealth. Wealthy men had more rights than those of a lesser wealthy man. Since they were considered to be the most important members of society, they were always treated with respect and admiration. Women's roles were much more different. They were expected to stay at home and take care of the house and children. Women living in rural areas often had to help their husbands or fathers tend to the land and the livestock. Whether it be cleaning, cooking, or raising children, women were considered morally weaker.
