Trucks will someday drive themselves out of warehouses and cruise down freeways without the aid of humans or even a driver’s cab — about that there seems little disagreement. The question is how soon that day gets here.
And while the answers vary — technologists, not surprisingly, are more bullish than truckers — billions of dollars and a growing parade of companies, from tiny start-ups to the country’s biggest trucking operations, are betting it will be here sooner than most people think.
This year, companies and investors are on pace to put just over $1 billion into self-driving and other trucking technologies, 10 times the level of three years ago, according to CB Insights, which tracks the venture capital industry.

The United States trucking industry is a very thriving industry and has continued to grow since the beginning of the 1900’s. The motor carrier act of 1935 allowed regulations to be set for the growing trucking industry. These standards made trucking safer for the driver and others as well. With the growing of mass production of products, transporting these goods was not efficient using trains or other types of shipping, so large trucks and trailers became the most popular method for shipping. This created a huge market for truck producers to supply trucks for the new form of freight transportation. Brother’s Jack and Augustus Mack saw the perfect opportunity to use their mechanical abilities.
Trucking has been a relevant career in the United States ever since the 19th century during WWI the army used trucks to transport goods to the soldiers. People in the towns and cities saw they were good transporter so as roads were built and paved more people start owning them. The Interstate Highway System was a big movement for truckers now they could haul there companies goods farther to other cities. The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 helped drivers who went on strike because of the price of gas to run and operate the trucks. As he drove he realized how good the open road looks as the road meet the sky. He helped pas the law that states if your drving record is good you can go in for the long haul.
The trucking industry over the years have changed the type of services and the quality that it has provides to its customers. In today’s industry the focus is on efficiency with the overall beneficiary being the American consumer. Majority of today’s freight is being transported by truck during sometime in the distribution chain. The recent surge in the cost of heating oil, diesel fuel, and gasoline in the United States has had significant impact on many sectors of the U.S. economy, but most importantly it has had quite a devastating affect on the trucking industry. This is important due to the fact that nearly “70% of U.S. communities rely solely on trucking for their supplies” (“ATA” 23). If the government continues it’s trend of non-intervention and refuses to place pressure on OPEC, the prices will continue to soar well over the two-dollar mark, and cause the trucking industry as a whole to shut down bringing the U.S. economy to a grinding halt.
Self-driving cars are the wave of the future. There is much debate regarding the impact a self-driving car will have on our society and economy. Some experts believe fully autonomous vehicles will be on the road in the next 5-10 years (Anderson). This means a vehicle will be able to drive on the road without a driver or any passengers. Like any groundbreaking technology, there is a fear of the unforeseen problems. Therefore, there will need to be extensive testing before anyone can feel safe with a vehicle of this style on the road. It will also take time for this type of technology to become financially accessible to the masses, but again alike any technology with time it should be possible. But it may take some time till we get there, there is still some things to be figured out before they are fully here. Two terms for the switch to autonomous have become standard in the auto industry. There's the path of evolutionary to autonomous vehicles where they eventually get better and better and more high tech as time goes on. So coming soon, today's cars will have more self driving features, and there will be many more autonomous options coming bit by bit. For example,Tesla's autopilot feature, is a form of evolution in vehicles. Autonomous cars are a whole new era in the car and vehicle industry. And even better, with more technology comes the "revolutionary" path. That's where cars will be completely self driven, not only autopilot like the Tesla, but completely self driving, like some of the ones Google is working on. It will start as test vehicle, and become more and more mainstream like autopilot vehicles as they will be able to drive in more places. It seems that self-driving vehicles may be futuristic and we are not that much technologically advanced for this to happen.But the reality is they are in prototype phase already.Their components include 360 degree sensors(actinometer), lasers, learning algorithms and GPS to navigate streets in an supreme precise fashion.They will be implemented fully in real world situations in the next 10-20 years.
