The Renaissance was a time of culture and rebirth. Some of the most brilliant minds in history were inspired by it. Three philosophers, Leonardo Bruni, Niccolo Machiavelli, and Baldassare Castiglione, wrote their best pieces of literature during this time period. All three pieces have been studied through time, and many of the ides have helped historians get an idea of what the past governments where like. World leaders throughout history have used the writers’ ideas. However, as the times changed, some ideas became outdated, except for one. Based on his writings, Leonardo Bruni’s vision of the renaissance and opinions of the government are most applicable to today’s global society.
Leonardo Bruni was a renowned humanist in the late 1300’s to the early 1400’s. He looked to authors like Plato, Livy, and Thucydides for inspiration for his work. Bruni resided in Florence, Italy where he heavily contributed to humanistic disciplines. It is important, especially in this day and age, to be unified. Many countries across the world are in small wars with each other that stop them from achieving true unity. Bruni’s ideal government also had a system of checks and balances. The United States government has three branches, so to ensure one branch doesn’t have too much power, the checks and balances system comes into play. Other countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and Canada use this system to have a well-functioning government. Bruni’s Republic has the most relevant ideas to today’s global society. The The Renaissance lasted from 1350 to 1550 and was known as the rebirth of knowledge in urban society. After the Middle ages occurred there was no education, no common language, and no true form of unity within the people of Europe, so the Renaissance was the reintroduction of education, language, urban society and a sense of togetherness within the countries of Europe. When the framers of our revered Constitution came together to produce our governing system, they wanted to avoid the precedent of an all powerful entity that could control its citizens. They broke governments role into three important phases, which were the power to make laws, the power to interpret laws, and the ability to enforce them. To further decentralize these authority holding organizations, they created a system that allowed each of the three sections to have a say in each of the others ability to exercise said authority. This organization of overlapping power is referred to as a checks and balances system and was intended to create three equal powers to govern the United States. It is abundantly clear how Leonardo Bruni feels about the city of Florence. In Panegyric to the City of Florence, he expresses nothing but the highest praise for the city. Every aspect of Florence is backed by a clear reason why it is the best, and there is no other city in the world that can compare. According to Bruni, Florence has extraordinary beauty, architecture, geography, history, government, and people. This, of course, is only one person’s opinion. In the diaries of Buonaccorso Pitti and Gregorio Dati, they too give their opinions on the city of Florence. In general, they do not seem to give Florence the same recognition and praise that Bruni gives.
Many people living in The United States like to think that our founding fathers thought of the basic construction of our whole government system. They really did not; Charles-Louis Secondat, baron de Montesquieu thought of the system of checks and balances plus the three branches of government. The whole framework of our Constitution is based on what Montesquieu thought of during the enlightenment period. The purpose of the three branches is to make it where no one person or group of people is greater than the rest. Montesquieu wanted to make a government where the people had a say in what happened and there wasn't a single person in charge. The term Renaissance has, over the years, become synonymous with ideas of expanding civilisation, rebirth, and cultural expansion. The most renowned example of a country’s cultural renaissance was that of the Italians; however this is only one example of such a cultural and philosophical paradigm. To begin with, a “renaissance” is a revolution of the rebirth of ideals within a country’s individuals: self-awareness, art, architecture, religion and science, to name a few. For it is these ideas that have given civilisations the drive and perseverance to rise from a period wrought with fallow and of social, cultural, and economical regression. Many prominent world powers today, and subsequently in the past, have went through a period of renaissance, which was preceded by what many call a dark age; it is through this time of upheaval that the ideas and socio-political philosophies flourished, paving the way towards each nations’ renaissance. To this, the Renaissance should not only be seen as an essential part of European history, but its ideals should also be credited philosophically for improving and influencing different developing societies through the ages.
Through the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, as well as political literature and diplomatic advancements, the Renaissance significantly influenced modern politics. This has been proven through the conversion evidences of Charles VII and Louis XI, The Prince and Discourses on Livy by Machiavelli, and the diplomatic developments made by Machivelli and Henry VII. In the end, despite the era being only three hundred years and happening several centuries ago, the Renaissance was a key point in the modern world’s political history.
