Bat mitzvahs, quinceaneras, and sweet sixteens, all of which are examples of ways to come of age. Coming of age is the process of growing into an adult, by going through a certain task. These tasks takes hard work and dedication and are usually not easy to accomplish. But once accomplished, one turns into a new person. In the book All the Bright Places, the short story, “Through the Tunnel”, and the Ted Talk, “What Fear can Teach you”, the characters come of age by using hard work and persistence to accomplish a goal to become a more mature person. In the book, All the Bright Places, the author, Jennifer Niven describes the two main characters working with each other to come to the age to stop worrying about their troubles. They have to recover slowly and they know it will take time. On page 190, one of the main characters, FInch states “ We can start small. Open up a new document or pull out a blank piece of paper. We’ll make it our canvas. Remember what Michelangelo said about the sculpture being in the stone- it was there from the beginning, and his job was to bring it out. Your words are in there too.” Niven wrote this statement to symbolize it takes time and work to achieve your goals. The characters throughout the story grow and get over their fears. A main character named Violet has at the beginning of the story would never drive in a car, because she was a witness of her sister's death in a car crash, which traumatized her for her life. Later in the book, because of the other character Finch, she gets into a car. On page 287, when Violet takes about it to her parents, she says “ I’m amazed at how easily the words come out of my mouth. I act like the fact that I’m asking if I can drive her car, when I haven’t driven in a year, is no big deal, but my mom is staring at me.” Her mom is amazed at
