In conclusion, policy makers and practitioners often try to assist in the formation of new firms but do not always succeed. Many firms fail despite all the assistance however the important factor is that the government continues to promote their creation so that new jobs and industries can be created. (Storey 1994) Both policy makers and practitioners need to ensure a level playing field so that the economy can grow, develop and compete with other economies around the world.
On October 13th I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Sandi Lopez. Lopez is from Grand Island, Nebraska and has also lived in Kansas for a few years. At first she was not quite sure on what to do with her career pathway. She wanted a job where she could be able to help others and her community. Lopez says that having many of her friends being police officers is what got her more into law enforcement. She says hanging out around her friends telling her stories about being officers made her really want to be a part of the law enforcement department. However, she says it was a very hard decision to make knowing the fact that she would have to work long hours and being with her family was very important to her. In the end, she decided
The free enterprise system allows individuals to make their own economic decisions without government restriction.Oprah Winfrey is just one entrepreneur who would have not been made successful without this system. This woman is a self-made billionaire with respect to her pursuance in acting, producing, television hosting, and as chairman of Harpo Inc. Many charities have been impacted from the donations of Winfrey and her actions. As a once poor and African American she is living proof that free enterprise allows anyone to become successful.
The free enterprise system was vital for Kelly Slater. Without the free enterprise system Kelly Slater would not have been able to venture out and create businesses. His companies consist of the “Fat Slater Burger” chain in Washington, a Football Team called the “Cocoa Beach Angels”, he has launched his own brand of Vodka known as Pure Wonderslater - US, and is tackling the juniors market with a top-selling perfume, With Love from Kelly, and a fashion line called “Kelly Slater Seduction”. Awards season is upon us, and I'm seeing the beautiful face of Ms. Jennifer Lawrence plastered on my screen a tad more than usual. She was one of the conversation topics at dinner last night (which of course I was forced to cook because I am a slave to the patriarchy). And of course, within five minutes we were discussing her naked picture debacle.
In todays society with our newer free enterprise system it is much easier for both entrepreneur and artists alike to not only make a name for themselves but also fairly make a decent fortune for them to live off. Though not regularly considered entrepreneurs many artists particularly in the music and entertainment industry should be looked at as such. The example that will be the focus in this instance is going to be Snoop Dogg who without a free enterprise system would have never been able to make the name for himself or the millions that he and his family enjoy and spread throughout this great country. Due to the lack of government involvement he was able to not just manage his own finances and businesses but more
In 1994, one of the most loved and relatable shows aired for the first time: Friends. The fan culture that people everywhere participate in, confirms that Friends even decades after its release, is still timelessly enjoyed. The show depicts the life of six best friends living in Manhattan -one of America’s most busting cities- as they each try to figure out who they are in their twenties and early thirties all while having the support of one another. The humor filled adventures of the these six best friends star Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, David Swhimmer as Monica’s brother Ross Geller, Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay and Mathew Perry as Chandler Bing. The show focuses on the
The Free Enterprise System is necessary for the growth and stability of a free world. Not only has the Free Enterprise System helped my parents live the American dream, but it has also given my siblings and I the life we live now. I live in a nice home, have more than enough food and water, and own more clothes than you can imagine. For my parents, the Free Enterprise System truly leveled the playing field, rewarding them for their hard work and contributions to society. Starting with nothing, we are no longer merely surviving - we are
Have you ever wondered what it takes to be successful? Some people are not born into success or wealth. Many successful entrepreneurs had a vision they turned into reality. Samuel Truett Cathy is one prime example of a man who lived out his convictions. An inventor of the beast-of-chicken sandwich, mall counter service in the days before food courts and Sunday closing as a policy, Truett Cathy celebrated his 80th birthday in 2001. Many might think of him as a true modern-day role model and hero. Some sees him as the Chick-fil-a man. From his book “It’s Easier to Succeed than to Fail”, Cathy represented a real-life case history showing that a determined and energetic entrepreneur can overcome anything. Cathy stated, “ The secret to success is not secret at all. It is very obvious, but we are too often blinded to the truth.” (Cathy, p. 191)
Business growth general is assumed to be good; bigger is assumed to be better (Hess, 2011), but if the proper planning is not in place it can lead to a business failure. Beginning a business based on something she loved, and needed in her life Susan Feller made the brave decision to build a successful business by baking and selling gluten-free cakes and desserts. After her retirement she focused on her dream and solving her own issue, finding food safe and healthy to eat for those, like herself, with Celiac disease and gluten allergies, but they also had to be delicious. Feller had some tough decisions to make as a small business owner, would she be able to keep up with the demand, how can she grow her business and what if she decided she had had enough and wanted to close the business? These are all decisions any business owner have to face at one point or another.
Carnegie states, “Under the law of competition, the employer of thousands is forced into the strictest economies, among which the rates paid to labor figure prominently, and often there is friction between employer and the employed, between capital and labor, between rich and poor” (393). It is this competitive nature which allows the hardest working individuals to rise above their peers, create personal wealth and continue to accumulate wealth. Competition is a beneficial to capitalism. A company can produce an item and sell the
The market economy is believed to be the most successful economic system created because of its success in most of the powerful countries in the world. According to economists, private firms and individuals own the factors of production in this economic system. In accordance to this it is perceived that firms and individuals are the ones that make the decisions on the 3 main economic questions: What to produce, How to produce and for whom to produce. Which is true based on how much influence firms and individuals have on an economy. Firms work hand in hand with individuals/households to keep a country’s economy running efficiently and equitably. Most businesses and business owners who are in this economic system are profit seekers, when looking at America you see that the most powerful participants in the economy have billions. Coming back to the 3 main economic question, economists have had us believe that the:
One advantage of a free market economy is that a free market “ensures the most desired goods and services are produced” (Amadeo). Furthermore, goods and services are produced efficiently because consumers determine demand as opposed to the government (Amadeo). Another advantage of the free market economy is the power to choose for the consumer. Without government limiting the number of sellers and or quantity of goods and services, buyers in a free market economy have the power to buy without fear of over regulation by the government (Amadeo). One negative aspect of the free market is there are “no mechanisms to care for those who are at an inherent competitive disadvantage”
Franchise owners do not have the freedom to make changes to their products and services based on their own personal interests or market requirements (Brockhouse, 1989). The parent company is the one instead with the mandate to make such decisions. Independent business owners, despite the high likelihood to have a higher investment cost to start and operate their business, have more control over decisions to invest and what time to do so. In Shania’s case, she has many willing investors and therefore as an independent business owner she has the power to decide whether to include them or not. She can also decide who to include and who not to include as she pleases. Franchises are associated with risks of negative publicity like for instance if one business under the franchise screw up the blame is put on the entire franchise, but for Shania as an independent business owner doesn’t have to worry about such possibilities. Freedom does bring happiness according to online surveys. The greatest reward of being an entrepreneur is the ability to control one’s destiny and the destiny of their business (Jenkins,
