The ISO 9001 derives from the quality management standards established for military and nuclear power fields. The publication of ISO 9001 provide a general applicable guideline to standardize a wide range of industrial areas, regardless of the type of product. Two typical industry fields will be selected to discuss how the implementation of ISO 9001 in their QMS.

3.2.1. Automotive industry

Quality in automotive industry reflects in three aspects: product quality, production quality and customer ownership quality (Juran 1999). Product quality means the product can satisfy customer requirements, like safety, drivability and so on. One interview mentions the statistical control process changed from the single one to integrate into production process in German automotive manufactures was caused by the implementation of ISO 9001 to satisfy the requirements (Steven Casper 1999).

The other implementation reflects in supplier relationship. “System Supplier” strategy has been widely applied in automotive industry to reduce vertical integration and share business risk (Clark, Fujimoto 1991). The introduction of ISO 9001 provides a multi-recognition tool for OEMs to admit their suppliers’ quality assurance. Since ISO 9001 defines the minimum requirements for quality management system, it is possible for final assemblers to set a benchmark for supplier to follow. Members in the Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) agrees implement ISO 9001 and acknowledge mutual auditing (Steven Casper 1999).

In summary, ISO 9001 strengths the ability of organization in automotive industry for quality assurance to create an effective quality management system and enables the system transparence for partners and third parties.
