In just two hundred and twenty - four years the United States of America has become the World and39th; greatest nation. Following the September 11th terrorist attacks many people began to question whether America was truly a great nation if everyone hated us. I have come to realize that even though there are issues that plague or way of life America is truly a great nation. America provides a good life for the common man. Wealthy individuals in every country live extremely well, but what differentiates America from other nations is that it provides a remarkably high standard of living for the & quot;common man." While American children spend most of their time in school, children in developing countries are mandated to hard labor. Edmonds and Pavcnik state, “Child labor is a problem worldwide, but it particularly affects children in developing countries. The work often exerts undue physical, social, or psychological stress, hampers access to education, and may be detrimental to social and psychological development.” (Edmonds and Pavcnik 2005). Over 2.11 million children suffer each day to aid in the support their families. Adults and children suffer daily to secure an immediate existence. These individuals may dream of a better life, but the current state of their country makes it difficult to obtain. Even middle-class individuals in the developing world endure hardships such as pollution, unsuitable drinking water and inadequate governing systems. What makes America great is that citizens are not relegated to such suffering and are able to create a better life. The current condition of our society allows us to create and secure of version of the “American Dream.” The American dream for many is based on opportunity, equality and freedom. As Americans one of our most precious values is freedom. In the United States we have religious, gender and racial freedoms that do not hinder our existence. Through the constitution we are afforded all freedoms that do or do not impeded the freedoms of others within reason. We also have religious and cultural freedoms that are not afforded to many nations. In recent news a homosexual couple was denied a wedding cake because the baker did not want to make it. The law does not force free individuals to perform task they do not wish to. The denied couple also has the right to sue the individual for denying them service. Freedom of choice is crucial to the structure of our society. As stated previously Americans have freedoms such as religion that are not afforded to many individuals in the world. Ideals such as secularism protect the rights and preferences of citizens. The separation of church and state allow freedom for both entities. In the middle east the lack of religious freedom is an all to real reality for citizens.
