Poverty is a social fact of life for billions of people around the world. “People are poverty-stricken when their income, even if adequate for survival, falls radically behind that of the community.” (Galbraith). There are many factors that have a role in the position of poverty. Many adults are past the point of no return and children have taken the fall for living in these poor families. These people have all been afflicted by common factors caused by their impoverished environment.
One way lives are affected by poverty is the structural inequality that infests the communities. Depending on the location of the impoverished community, transportation may not be a viable option. Most major cities including New York and Chicago have buses and …show more content…

Impoverished peoples have a huge disadvantage when it comes to this. Many impoverished people cannot afford to eat healthily, inturn they are left with cheap meals and fast foods. This causes a very poor balanced diet. According to “Poverty Stats”, over 1.1 billion people in developing countries have insufficient access to clean drinking water. These cause problems such as sickness and poor health. There are many cases of drugs being a contributing factor to poverty. “Someone addicted to drugs can quickly lose their job or have a hard time holding down a job. All the money they do have goes toward buying more drugs. When someone is so controlled by drug addiction, nothing else matters and the person can easily slip into poverty.” (Seacliff Recovery). Cleanliness creates better hygiene and a better overall outlook on life. Cleanliness is often a commonly overlooked fact that reflects on the person 's personality. High school is expected but college is simply (usually) not an option. The association between poverty and a child’s academic performance has a very common trend line. “The link between poverty and low academic achievement has been well established.” (Engle, Black 2). Consequences of early school failure are increased likelihood of truancy, dropout, and unhealthy or delinquent behavior. “Evidence from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Early Child Care Research Network has shown that children in chronically impoverished families have lower cognitive and academic performance and more behavior problems than children who are not exposed to poverty, partially explained by a lack of stimulating behaviors and home experiences among low-income families” (Engle, Black 2). If there is a student that is behind in academic preparation from an early beginning, the chances of the student achieving readiness becomes very slim or may never happen at all.
