Social Media Networks: Facebook & Twitter’s Influence Does anyone you know currently use either Facebook, Twitter or both as their social media networks? Do you yourself have an account on Facebook, Twitter, or both? There are many ways Facebook and Twitter are influences as social networks. Facebook was launched on February 4th 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and several other Harvard students (Lüsted 98). The first version of Twitter was launched on March 21st 2006 by Jack Dorsey (Lüsted 101). Twitter is a unique way of posting a message, similar to sending a text message or SMS (short message service) on your mobile device. This is used to share whatever message one is saying to a group of people rather than to a single person, and it does not have to be done on a mobile device. Facebook and Twitter’s influences as social networks are displayed in their accessibility, content, and features.
There are many ways Facebook and Twitter use accessibility to provide influence. Facebook and Twitter are competing in the internet industry. These companies have many similarities when it comes to their accessibility. Facebook and Twitter both have mobile apps that make accessibility present virtually anywhere you go. Access can be gained through the applications or directly by using the website’s URL. This means a person can access Facebook or Twitter on a computer or a cell phone. An account on either of these networks can be set to public or private. If an account is set to public then anyone without your permission or knowledge can view whatever content is accessible. There are features that are present on both networks. There is a feature that allows Facebook and Twitter to be integrated together. This allows a user to post a status on one of the websites, and then that post is automatically shared to the other networks the user has connected at the same time. When a user has Facebook and Twitter integrated one post will automatically post on the other network as well. Updates of a user’s status can be posted to the live feed of either network instantly in real time. Instant private messages can be sent between users on either Facebook or Twitter. Instant messaging allows people who are online at the same time to communicate instantly by typing and sending messages. “Texting does not require anyone to be online. But Twitter would take instant messaging and texting a step beyond. With Twitter, messages could be shared with hundreds of friends at once, and displayed on the Internet for all to see” (Lüsted 71). Lüsted is giving an example of how Twitter is taking instant messaging and texting a step further than a text message by messages being able to be shared with hundreds of followers at once. There is a different influence in a message sent from one person to another rather than a message shared where it is viewable by hundreds of people.
