I had not heard about inductive interview until my professor assign our qualitative research class an exercise related to that topic. He required our class to “inductively determine your interviewee’s conception of “closeness” without asking for a definition. Actually, I was confused about the true meaning of inductive interview. I have had some basic understandings of inductive approach and inductive analysis but I was not sure about the connection between these concepts and inductive interview. I did a quick search on google and no exact concept was found. So I came back to the assignment requirement and tried to find some clues of how to conduct an inductive interview. Without a structured protocol, I did not know where I should have developed follow-up questions. In some points of the interview, I received a whole bunch of information and became overwhelmed. There were some pauses during my short interview. Sometimes, the interviewee waited for me to ask more questions. She even kept asking me “Do you want to know anything else?” After first twenty minutes of the interview, I really felt hard to keep track with the interview. I was abashed and a little bit panicking to propose the next question. Sometimes, I asked a random question just to maintain the interview. I felt like I was in a marathon that I was exhausted at the last run. I have been uncomfortable when recalling the interview. I keep reminding myself that I did not know how to maintain a real inductive interview. Because the assignment just required a transcript for only twenty minutes, so I selected the best part of the interview. The terrible part did not show up in the transcript. Then, I just analyzed the good part of the interview. Eventually, I forgot about my own concern of how badly I did with with an inductive interview. The information I received from my interviewee seemed pretty good, so that I even started thinking that the interview was not
