Divergent is a science fiction film that was introduced in 2014. The film tackles: social programming, manipulation, and individually. Although the movie mainly deals with the characters’ individuality, it categorizes them into five groups: Abnegation, the selfless; Amity, the peaceful; Candor, the honest; Dauntless, the brave; and Erudite, the intellectual (Wiki). The categories are based on someone’s personality assets and advantages. The movie closely relates to present day as well as the past, because of the social groups people are unknowingly being forced into. There are many factors that lead to the development of an individual’s identity. Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” illustrates an extreme change in Gregor Samsa’s external identity and the overall outward effect it has on the development of his family. While James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” illustrates a young man struggling to find his identity while being pushed around by what society and his family wants him to be. Both of these characters exhibit an underlying struggle of alienation but both also demonstrate a craving for belongingness. This conflict of trying to belong to something as well as satisfying the needs of society, has directly impacted their own individuality and the lives of the people around them.
The five factions in Divergent’s serve as values that citizen can aspire to achieve in their fullest. The fearless are drawn to Dauntless, the intelligent to Erudite, the kind to Amity, the honest to Candor, and the selfless to Abnegation. I do not think that only these factions represent every basic personality type, nor fulfill all of people’s basic needs. To fill in the gaps, I would create factions for the selfish and manipulative, among others.
The author of Divergent ,Veronica Roth, analyzes as to why people act and thinks the way they do and to why they defy the system. She uses the psychological aspects of behavior genetics, neuroscience, and social cultural. The norms are what allow societies to thrive, without the norms society would go into chaos as no one would be able to be kept in line. Divergent follows the life of a young girl who is faced with the choice to decide in which faction to spend the rest of her days. Unlike her peers and fellow city, she is not in the norm she can not be just one personal trait nor could she be manipulated through simulations. In this utopian society everyone is classified into five factions based on mental state; However, Beatrice Prior’s mental state can not be classified into just one faction as her brain structure and genetics are not damaged, like the vast majority of the city.
Both A “Brave New World” and events from our own world disprove the statement that individuality is seen as a threat to a harmonious society. In the book Huxley introduces the characters Bernard, Helmholtz, and John as outsiders. They do not fit into the societies that they are a part of which threatens the system Mustafa Mond and the other world leaders have instilled into the society. The accusation above is flawed and incorrect. Individuality was seen as a threat to a harmonious society however it is not a threat. It is important for civilization to keep moving forward.

The beliefs of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Galileo on the Bible are similar in some aspects, but mostly different from one another. Martin Luther and John Calvin are somewhat similar in their belief that faith alone is the key to salvation. Galileo, however was a scientist, and his views on the Bible differ from those of Calvin and Luther. Since Galileo was not a theologian, most of his writing is not about God and the Bible, but it is about science. Though their writings are very different, Calvin, Luther, and Galileo all speak about the subject of human individualism. Their views of human individualism differ from one another, and arise from different circumstances. Each of these three men’s writings contain their beliefs on human individualism and how it relates to the individual’s relationship with God.
The idea of Individualism can be traced all the way back to England before America’s existence. As we know, individualism has been interpreted in many forms throughout history. The 19th century is no different, taking hold of its own idea of individualism, called transcendentalism. Transcendentalism suggests freedom should not be confined to those focused on money and superficial gains. Instead, people should depend on no one but themselves. This society which is based on the futuristic city of Chicago have narrowed out which traits they deem to be dangerous to the community and attempt to destroy all teachings that cause these traits to be developed. The story Divergent takes place in a future version of Chicago. In this futuristic city there are five distinct factions. Each faction has a different characteristic by which they follow. They all have a different opinion on which is best, but, the Dauntless believe bravery is the best, the Erudite think knowledge is the key to success, Abnegation is a bit out there and believes being pro-self-sacrifice is the way to go, the Amity loves friendship, and the Candor are the realists of this crazy place. The main character of this story is Beatrice Prior, she grew up in an abnegation family, but when she turned 16 she decided to join the Dauntless. She made this choice, because, she thought they were “cool” they have tattoos, piercings, and leather jackets. Beatrice also didn’t really fit in with the Abnegation, she was Divergent.

As a nation, while the United States has a strongly individualistic nature from a personal perspective, there is also a strong collectivist belief regarding everyone outside of themselves and their groups.
