What is tolerance, and how can we increase it in classrooms today? Tolerance is “recognizing and respecting other’s beliefs and practices without making a negative impact about it” (Neufeldt 1994). It’s about knowing everyone is different in many ways then not. Students growing up in societies were diversity it looked frowned upon is something we need to change and make more positive. We are looking to help people of all races, culture and background to be who they are without making them feel afraid to do so. Although increasing tolerance is the goal, intolerance will always be around us. However, teaching tolerance in the classroom can make an impact and help make diversity more positive. These activities allow time for the students to communicate and work together, as well as get to know each other. However teachers can also introduce the idea of tolerance through classroom novels. Although novels may not be able to bring the reality of tolerance to personal experience, it can still send a message to the students. Tolerance isn’t a subject we should leave out of the education curriculum instead it should be an everyday concept that is taught. I hope he learned more than academic lessons from me, and instead learned how friendships and relationship with others can make a situation seem less stressful or scary. I understand that multicultural education is almost over, and the requirements for mentoring is also almost over, however I know as of right now, I will try to stay _______ mentor for the rest of the school year. He deserves to have someone he can rely on each week, and I not ready to let the mentoring relationship we have built over the months be done. I want to see him grow though the rest of his eight grade
